Default When you restock..

Maybe consider adding AMD servers. Even as a low-end Sempron to replace the celeron. The Planet is adding AMD Athlon 64 3200's and I was thinking you guys would jump on the bandwaggon aswell. I have my DevBox running on an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ running smooth as butter and I can't be happier with it.

An AMD server would be cool.

Intels are faster. AMD servers work really well for games, but don't have the same speed when being used as servers. Intel really kicks for business/server applications.

I respect your opinion but I use computing for high cpu intesive applications and AMD rock on that, too. All depends the AMD and the Intel we are talking about...

True, but from the stats I've seen, anything that requires highly intensive CPU power, like Photoshop and Illustrator or other high end application programs run much faster on Intel. AMD seems to be extreemly fast when it comes to games, but the same CPU running Photoshop or acting as a server (multitasking) is a dog. I was suprised at just how bad the AMDs were doing compared to Intels. I really wanted a machine that was good for games and applications, but ended up going Intel because work was more important than gaming.

I do not use my AMD machines for gaming but I do not use them for Photoshop and Illustrator either. So I cannot speak for that. I beleave you. I just think things are not as clean as water was you say.

I know that using 3D studio, MP3 encoding, divx encoding, some types of number crunshing that use on my research and some applications that produce stereo on my screen certainly AMD leave the Intel behind. But all depends what you want to do. I would like to see a benchmark about the use of Intel and AMD on webservers. The last one I read was maybe two years ago and what they said at the time was that the Intel machine consumed so much more power that the maintenance price difference at the end of year was about 150 USD or more (more electric power, more heat, more air conditioning, etc).

by the way in the last six months AMD jumped on market share a lot and Intel lost. Intel is preparing new chips to recover.

Vt

EDIT: They are pretty close in database benchmark, big price difference.

I was on Tom's Hardware and found some great charts, but now I can't seem to find them. That site is huge...

hehe. I have a friend that is a very big fan of Intel. Just to annoy him I used to send him links from Tom's Hardware. He refused to read them because he claims Tom's hardware is biased to AMD ;-) Don't forget it was Tom that found the now famous Pentium bug several years ago.

Yes, photo editing, but no high end Pentium chips listed.... odd. Where is the 940?

I'm partial to AMD as well. It used to be because AMD always had more L2 cache, but Intel finally caught on. In all of my tests I have found AMD to be superior. Intel has great chips, but if I was given the choice of AMD or Intel, I would choose AMD anyday.

To be honest, I like the AMD as well, but Dell just doesn't get it, so I'm using Intels...

Core 2 Duo smokes AMD's Athlon 64 X2
http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/07/14/co...hmark_results/

The new Intel Xeon based on this architecture are also out. Much less power and heat generated, a big jump in performance. It seems Intel got the lead over Athlons and Opterons now.

The beggining is outdated but it's beeing updated with the new Woodcrest Conroe based from Intel that crushs all previous benchmarks. Since it's hard to find reviews about the best processors to use in servers mysql/php a leave this URL here:

Opteron vs. Xeon performance battle goes into the next round

Sunnyvale (CA) – AMD today released new performance benchmark results for its fastest Opteron processors and reclaims the performance crown in the 2P dual-core arena. While these specific numbers are on AMD’s side, it really depends on your view, which company has the fastest 2P processor: Intel points to its quad-core CPU and says nothing has changed in the performance arena.
