Default Yet another addon domain question

Ok let's say....

My main account is hostgator.com and i also purchase the domain addon.com...

i log onto my hostgator.com account to add the domain addon.com and it sets it up to addon.hostgator.com

How do i change it to where my domain will just be addon.com?

You don't need to change anything.
There are three ways you can access the addon domain:
http://addon.com
http://addon.hostgator.com
http://hostgator.com/addon/

Remember, there is a difference between how browsers handle domains/add-on domains/sub-domains and how *nix handles them in your file/directory structure. Get your mind right: these two concepts are not equal to each other.

Browsers treat them differently, but the file structure for sub-domains and add-on domains is the same. That is:

- PrimaryDomain files go in directory public_html
- Sub-Domain files go in directory public_html/SubDomainDirectory
- Add-on Domain files go in directory public_html/Add-onDomainDirectory

Now, you say it's registered.
- As addon.com?
- Has that name (addon.com) had time to propagate?
- Only AFTER both of those have happened can you go through HG's Add-On process (NOT the subdomain process): have you done this?

If you answer yes to all these, then you need to open a ticket, but if you're not in a BIG hurry, provide the actual addon.com in this forum so we can check it out.

If anyone here says to do a Rewrite or Redirect, ignore them. If you went through the 3 steps above, there is no need to do a Rewrite or Redirect; something is wrong.

Before you can add an addon domain you must change the name servers for the domain name to the ones provided for your hosting account. You cannot create an addon domain if your DNS for the site you are trying to add hasn't propagated yet. Read more...
READ THIS BEFORE SETTING UP AN ADDON DOMAIN!

If you do a little search on the forums and/or Knowledgebase on HostGator you could find most off the questions you have about, how to do those things..

Change the nameservers at your registrar. It usually takes a few hours, but give it 24 or so just in case.

If you can't find out how to change your Domain Name Servers
You can find a few examples here on HostGator's Tutorial Page (Flash Movies) if that doesnt help you, then just contact your registrar, and ask them...

I usely Check on IRC (chat server) "/dns Domainname.com" to see if it's propagated. If it is, it should return the IP address provided for your hosting account. You could also check if it's propagated by just visiting the domainname (URL) if it is propagated it should not bring you to it's old location or registrar page..

NOTE: Some registrars don't allow you to change the DNS when the domain isn't added to the name servers yet. (on your hosting account)

in that case just add the domain to your hosting account first, and afther the dns change when it's propagated remove it from your account. And add it again. (i know, it's stupid)
