Default Wordpress setup Q

I'm looking to set up a WP blog as the main page on my site - problem is, I'd like to be able to work on it without the general public seeing it until I've finished.

Would I be able to set up the blog in a subdirectory for starters and then simply copy the files over to the main directory once I'm ready for it to 'go live'...?

Would I have issues with the database if I did this?

Yes that would be a good idea

If its a new site.. you could password protect the public_html folder if you wanted to install into the root of your site,

Possibly.. but to fix it all you would need to do is change the url in the configuration of wp

What I do with a site that uses php is insert an index.html into the root. It's will appear to users coming to your site unless they use a direct link. Then to work on the site you call the filename

Ohhh, so the .html pages take precedence over the .php pages?

If that's the case, I can pretty much leave well enough alone as right now I have an .html placeholder page anyway - no shuffling required!
