Personally, I would consider installing it manually by downloading from wordpress.org and follow the instructions they give for installing. It is not particularly difficult to install as long as you follow the directions closely.

The automatic installation is through the Fantastico link in your cPanel.

To answer your original question:

Wordpress is installed through Fantastico, as are a number of free programs, and it DOES work that way.

But striddy is correct: Manual install is easy, and preferred.

I too agree with installing it yourself vs automation. Here is a video someone posted for me when I asked about installing word press.
Installing Wordpress manually

I am a idiot when it comes to this stuff but these people here are great in answering questions and helping people like us.. LOL

This video is by Hostgator and it walks you through step by step how to install Word Press.... I even was able to follow it and get it installed....

Good Luck!

Something that is nice about the newer version of WordPress is that it literally upgrades itself once you initially install it. This makes the whole "having a manually installed WordPress installation" process much easier and more feasible than it used to be.

Is there a way to install Wordpress (maybe like in a sub domain?) and practice using Wordpress?

I follow the posts here on the forum and it seems that most here agree that Wordpress is one of the best CMS to use. I have used Site Studio up to date and I do see the limitations it has. I would like to try Wordpress and see how the learning curve goes.

You sure can. Create either a sub directory or a sub domain, then install it.

Are you sure, DHanna?

Without the "Wordpress Automatic Upgrade" plugin, I don't think it updates all by itself.

Here's the homepage to the plugin:

http://techie-buzz.com/wordpress-plu...2-release.html

And the "official" plugin version/docs on the WP site:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...matic-upgrade/

Or were you speaking literally about updating itself DURING the initial install?

If you have 2.7, then there is no longer any need for the upgrade plugin as upgrade functionality is built into the core.

Yeah, I installed the latest one.

But I didn't see anything there about automatic upgrading until I installed the mentioned plugin.

What did I miss?

When there is an update, it will show in the dashboard. Then it's just > Tools > Upgrade.

OK, I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Yes, there *IS* automatic upgrading built-in: Tools -> Upgrade

The "WP Auto Upgrade" plugin does work, but is found under a different tab: Posts -> Automatic Upgrade.

I thought the first was the second, and I never even saw the second.

Another good plugin rendered moot.

And in case anyone else missed it, WP 2.8 Beta is available. I think I'll have to give that a look-see.

Thanks, David.

However, if you install it via Fantastico, don't you have to let it create the directory?

You can select to install it on the subdomain, so it will be installed in the subdirectory where the subdomain resides (or in it's subdirectory if you want).
