wordpress multisite subdomain install

using google :-) - I have found that the preferred way to make wordpress multisite work with subdomains on a cpanel host is "just go into subdomains and enter * (wildcard domain)..

done that...works.

But....
ftp.domainname.com still works fine (gives ftp)
webmail.domainname.com doesn't work (gives wordpress subsite signup)
cpanel.domainname.com doesn't work (gives wordpress subsite signup)
whm.domainname.com doesn't work (gives wordpress subsite signup)

in DNS ftp is a "A name"
in DNS webmail is a "A name"
in DNS cpanel is a "A name"
in DNS whm is a "A name"

now....what's up with that ?

Tru restarting your DNS Server via WHM..

Are you still experiencing issues? DNS takes a bit of time to propagate throughout the web. Please allow up to 24-72 hours for DNS propagation to complete.

have for now stopped my experiment, but will update this thread again when I'm testing again (soon).
