Dear Santa:
I have been a very good boy all this years and I would like that HG brings Windows hosting with the following features: -Same space/bandwidth/PRICE of the linux plans -Host unlimited domains -A good control panel to create websites (Applications) without asking support -Enough MSSQL server space, if possible shared with web space, unlimited databases -Ability to connect to use management studio with MSQL databases -Subversion! That would definitely eat up the competition Im currently with webhost4life and they are pretty good, but the problem is: they charge per MSSQL extra database, low disk space, they charge extra for each domain you want to provide email service. I also have a plan in dreamhost just for the space and SVN, so I (and many more) would definitely land in HG for life

Also a pre-installed application for Remote Desktop connecting,
Because what i wish to use my server for requires the use of a 'Desktop' and being to upload 'exe' and run them, Remote Desktop Examples: http://www.remotelyanywhere.com/ Another example would be the pre-installed one on WindowsOS

They don't allow remote desktop do they for web hosting?
I'd thought that was only if you had a dedicated server. |

When HG does provide Windows dedicated, which they said they will, I doubt that it will have the same price as the *nix box; because of the licensing fees of both OS & MSSQL.
I will still be happy if they provide windows hosting with php/mysql with the same price, tho I'll be worried a bit more about the security issues n MS patches.

on another thread there was a talk about webmin, but one of the gators ( i guess) said it has some issues with servers that do run Cpanel.

Windows servers typically include Remote Desktop. It's a huge part of doing the administration for them. I'm sure the HG windows ones, at least the dedicated (if not the shared) will have it too.

Question, if the Window shared deals are the same as the Linux versions with the same plan, can people ask to be moved to them?

I'm still waiting for the Windows 2008 + cPanel interface to see if HG will also implement it or just keep to Plesk/Windows.

I think unix/linux hosting is far better than Windows hosting in general, and it's a lot cheaper (because you don't have to pay for OS and Database licensing). That said, one of my clients has a critical application that's written with ASP.net and uses MSSQL, so if I have to use a Windows server, I'd at least like to use HostGator.

will the windows servers support Sharepoint sites?

So, what is the real difference between the two?
I've always had it in mind, that Linux is the best for servers and everything, so why would a user want to use Windows? |

Remote Desktop Access,
Ability to use 'exe' User-Friendly GUI.. Etc.. You get what you pay for.. and since you dont pay for Linux (In General)

The fact is that just like some desktop applications need Windows to run, some server applications are built for Windows only. One of my clients had a web application built for their business and it was built in ASP.net with MSSQL. That means he must use a Windows server (things like chilisoft won't work). The difference is that with servers, there are far more pieces of software available and used for Linux than for Windows.

What would be sweet is a reseller plan that allowed Windows AND Unix hosting. I'd never use Windows hosting - but it would be extremely excellent to be able to offer it.

It is funny how the "windows vs. linux" war always start.
The linux guys always start: Linux is better than Windows bla, bla, bla In fact, yes, the 80% percent or so of the servers on internet are LAMP based, but if there were no market for windows hosting, there would not be any Windows Only hosting companies, and hostgator would never considered it. Personally, Im in both worlds, I only develop .NET applications, the tools are years away more advanced and productive than in linux php (what an ugly spagethy language) and I have windows hosting plan, but I take advantage of the price/space/bandwidth provided by linux hosting companies to store files and MySQL databases. I prefer to be open to be closed in my small Microsoft (or linux) world. See you soon gators

Some companies offer a dual linux/windows system, but it's a bit limited on some reseller aspects (no WHMCS and WHMAP support for instance), and it's typically far more expensive than the HG reseller plans (one particularly is $100/month, plus $20/month for SSL support). They are able to do it because all the computing is grid-based, and they have Windows and Linux machines in the grid.

"Ability to use binary executables... linux needs no extention User-friendly GUI.. except you have a choice, Gnome, KDE, Xfce anyone? You get what you pay for.. you can pay a linux vendor for support too if that what you need" also, if you want remote desktop on linux someone mention SSH.. but thats more like telnet. look at proprietary programs like nomachine.com or install the open-source (and hence free of cost) VNC. they both work much like remote desktop for that "point and click" interface. |
