I currently have a reseller hosting account with HG. Like many resellers I don't offer (or try to avoid offering) cpanel access or support requests for their cpanel.
Why then, is it in my interest to have an aluminum plan (12 Gb storage / 125 xfer) When for only 6.95 at Bluehost I can get 300 Gb storage / 3000 xfer? What I'm asking is - what is the advantage of having a reseller plan at HG? Is it worth an extra $18 per mo.? |

However, there is an advantage of a reseller account. 1. Different cpanels means if one account in your reseller account acts up, it gets suspended. On a shared account at blue, the whole account would be suspended. 2. Different cpanels means each can have an SSL and an IP address. 3. Private nameservers. 4. Account segregation, when clients need cpanel access 5. Account segregation, each account is running under a different user id. They can't access each other, so a hacker in one account, can't access the rest of the accounts in the reseller account. 6. Account segregation, each account can be transfered away using cpanel, so if you lose an account, its easy to move away. 7. Account segregation, new accounts are easy to add from existing cpanel accounts. Overall, the reseller account is just a tool that a reseller would use before moving to a dedicated anyway. Don't think of a reseller account as a destination, its just a stop on the way to a real account. Sure, a dedicated is more expensive, but it is the answer to most problems that don't involve chaffing. |

use reseller plan only when you want to sell hosting plan. you can downgrade to baby plan anytime.

and with a non reseller plan, there is that TOS issue if you are actually reselling from that space.

It would certainly make life easier, (for managing multiple sites)...

Another really good reason is if you have multiple sites that need security certificates--you can only do 1 dedicated IP per cPanel, and each certificate needs its own IP. |

Serra pretty much summed it all up with his post anyways...

Quite true...except the security certificates, which he probably didn't mention because anybody who runs multiple sites requiring their own certificates probably should bite for a dedi.

I'm assuming you meant root certificate, right?

I have been looking around at other hosting providers. I LOVE HOSTGATOR, *but* the space/bandwidth for reseller plans vs shared hosting plans is kind of mest up. One another host (name not going to be gave) that has been around since 2001 and offers something similar to the gold reseller plan, but for $30 a month compared to hostgators $75 a month. I am willing to do $30 a month for the extra security of having the sites separated (yes hg has a $30 plan, but it does not offer same space/bandwidth as the other host), and then there is for $50 more then that a month I could rent a dedicated rack on rackspace, theplanet or some other upper level hosting centers and get 80gb of space and most bandwidth. I am really hoping that hostgator will work with me and finding a middle ground, cause I rather give you my money then some other host. . . |

If you're talking only a couple of domains, there's always the option of getting completely separate shared plans.

I read that list twice and don't know how I missed it. Serra did nail everything (except the root certificate issue, which you did).

ha, i am talking about upwards of 50 domains with more coming daily.
and they would not really work with me. So, I am going to take my business elsewhere. Shrug.

If you are gonna get that many domains you would need a dedicated server.. good luck with another host i bet they wont be as good as HG!

I wouldn't say so... if they're all static sites with nothing dynamic -- no forums, etc -- he's only going to use disk space and bandwidth... CPU usage will be fairly low and he'd be just fine... anybody would...
