I mean the dedicated servers come with much less bandwidth and space than some of the shared hosting plans.
So why would anyone upgrade to a dedicated server unless they want to do something not allowed in a shared one like a proxy host. So anyway why is it that you pay 50 times the price and you get less? I spoke to someone about this and they said it was a policy or something and the talk got disconnected. |

As Rockoids says, the biggest difference is you can use all of the dedicated resources as you are the only account on the server. You also have control over the server and can make modifications to the software as you wish since no other accounts are affected.
Even the fairly low powered unmanaged dedicated server I have runs my sites much more reliably than they ran on a shared account on an HG or other hosting server. |

So why don't they just say Unlimited bandwidth? Or does a server only have that low bandwidth? Does a dedicated server come with more bandwidth than all of the other packages..?

With shared, make it theoretical, because you will never be able to achieve that sort of thing in real-world use. |

Germz, a useful comparison might be some restaurant offerings.
"All you can eat" for $7.95: That's essentially advertising unlimited food for one person, right? But other constraints kick in long before your system takes in the infinite amount of food. In addition, you're not allowed to take any with you or share with other diners. "Clem's Big 10 Takeout Banquet" for $49.95: 10 jalapeno puffs, 10 containers of coleslaw, 10 potato pucks, 10 brats, 10 Polish sausages, 10 pieces of fried chicken, 10 cheeseburgers, 10 cranberry turnovers, and 10 packs of Tums. You pick up that box of indigestion-bait, and you can do whatever you want with it...whether one person or 10 share it, it's a finite amount.

You should not have been disconnected from the line, if you were disconnected on purpose. I encourage you to pm GatorBrent regarding that event if you know the representative's name. HostGator is a respectable company and I know Brent does not tolerate such actions.

Other reasons for a dedi: no email limits; theoretically no blacklists from server neightbors; better performance, as others have said; and better security.
Also, if someone is running e-commerce sites, in addition to better security, the math very quickly makes a dedi cost effective. Each ecommerce site (separate domain) needs its own certificate. Each certificate needs its own IP ($2 a month for shared and reseller accounts) and installation (HG must install it on shared and reseller accounts, $10 one-time). Even the unmanaged dedi comes with five of its own IPs, you don't need HG to install certificates, you can set up security rules that would be unworkable on a shared server, and you'll know that if your site ever goes down it's not because a server neighbor has let in some bad actors.

Some major advantages of the dedi are full control over what software/versions/options/etc. you run, ability to oversell, FAR fewer problems with blacklisting, more control over spam management, to name a few.
you also will never be suspended for overuse of the cpu and can run whatever mailing lists you need to. dedi's aren't for everybody, but once you get to certain point with your clients, you're going to start to hit a wall with what you can do on a shared. also, if you run a popular site, you need the additional assurance that a good day won't put you over shared resource limits. i've never been sorry i got my dedi.
