Question What's the difference between Linux and Windows hosting?

Ok so I signed up and am still verifying my account

But what's the difference between Linux/windows hosting??

Does no windows hosting mean that they don't host websites from like windows ME?

It doesn't matter what operating system you use. Windows or linux hosting refers to the operating system that the server your account is on uses. If you do a Google search on 'Differences Windows Linux Hosting' you will find a lot of resources describing the differences and how to choose between them.

to give you an idea, most of the time, php pages will be from linux hosting and asp pages will be from windows hosting. (not always, but in general.) linux hosting is the most common, so depending on who is working on your site with you, they'll probably be more familiar with it.

i'd suggest unless you have a specific reason to use windows hosting, use the linux version.

Also with a windows server you could use remote desktop to remote control the server (assuming you have you're own dedicated server) just like you were sitting in front of it. Which is actually pretty cool and could make certain things easier I suppose than typing ssh commands like on a linux server os.

You mean just like VNC works with Linux?

Linux is much much stable and very easy for Newbies.

Windows hosting has its own advantages its great to see hostgator offering both.

if he doesn't know the difference between linux and windows hosting, it's unlikely he'll be doing much in shell.

I think so, I was never able to get VNC working because I didn't have a shell installed (or something I think, I'm a noob myself when it comes to anything beyond basic ssh commands).

I have related questions I hope someone can help me with.

I am considering moving two websites from another provider to HG. The other hosting service is Windows based. When all of the files are transfered, won't all of my poor habits used in the past cause the "new" webistes to be broken due to naming conventions, file extentions and so forth? I seem to recall, for example, the file names are case sensitive in Linux? It could be a major redo if the two OS's have a lot of differences.

Anyone else xfer their stuff from windows to linux?

Shawn

This generaly shouldn't much of a problem as long as you edit you .htaccess file to go ahead and read for example .htm for .html, also Index.html for index.html
