An Unlicensed version of CPanel was installed on his VPS. He is probably very limited to what he can do on the server.

Your server doesn't have CPanel installed.

Yeah, I asked to have cPanel installed.

Edit: I appreciate you guys installing an unlicensed copy of cPanel for me.

I'm not sure if they'll give me a license for it... in the event that they won't, I'll get the license.

DaveC, how long does this trial usually run?

It shouldn't really allow you to do that much if its not licensed. I'm actually not 100% sure, since we make sure to get a licenses for all of our shared and reseller servers.

So far, I'm unimpeded in setting things up... in fact, it looks like I have access to everything like in my test VM.

I'll get back to you on that, if you'd like?

I'm trying to install the cpanel via the application tab in Plesk!

I'm was still getting, before starting the installation, an error when I click "server", "Virtuozzo", "clients"... on the left hand side menu in plesk. telling me that plesk is not installed.

I got a VPS beta test account also.

But because these VPS accounts will be (at least mostly) used for webhosting (one or more sites), I'd say that testing it without cPanel/WHM is not very useful.

It's also missing compiler (and probably other development tools).

Yeah, definitely.

I'm currently updating it, as per the DediKiddy guide.

After all, the VPS is sort of a dedicated server. :P

I've got issues with Virtuozzo and CSF.

Beware. I'm working on this, though.

Edit: It's related to iptables... and the modules needed.

Specifically: if you're trying to set up Passive FTP, you'd need to set pure-ftp.conf's settings to:

# Port range for passive connections replies. - for firewalling.

PassivePortRange 30000 50000

... I'm not entirely sure how to get CSF's iptables config to work with the port range above.

But this is something to keep in mind.

... blast, I can't edit the above post.

There's apparently an issue with CSF not working correctly on the VPS solutions that HG's been doing.

VPS iptables problems

This is basically what I've been running into and I can't fix it.

Since I don't know who's handling VPS stuff, I hate having to place my issue here, since this isn't really the right place for it...

You are beta testing HostGator's VPS, and this is the right place to report the problems you have with it.

I noticed the same problem with iptables, I installed the trial version of cPanel + csf, and when I tried to run easyapache it just didn't work, but if I disabled csf it did work.
Code:
root@finn7 [~]# perl /etc/csf/csftest.pl
Testing ip_tables/iptable_filter...OK
Testing ipt_LOG...FAILED [FATAL Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for csf to function
Testing ipt_multiport/xt_multiport...FAILED [FATAL Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for csf to function
Testing ipt_REJECT...OK
Testing ipt_state/xt_state...FAILED [FATAL Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for csf to function
Testing ipt_limit/xt_limit...FAILED [FATAL Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for csf to function
Testing ipt_recent...FAILED [Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for PORTFLOOD feature
Testing ipt_owner...FAILED [Error: iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615] - Required for SMTP_BLOCK and UID/GID blocking features
Testing iptable_nat/ipt_REDIRECT...FAILED [Error: iptables v1.3.5: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)] - Required for MESSENGER feature

RESULT: csf will not function on this server due to FATAL errors from missing modules [4]

It's GatorDaveC taking care of this beta testing, I sent a PM to him.

Ah, good to know I wasn't the only one having this issue.

My post on ConfigServer's forum hasn't received any replies, though there were plenty of viewers.

My iptables post

Regarding my comment about not knowing where, it was because I was considering going to Live Chat and asking if something could be done about it.

I did receive basically the same errors as you did, and had tried adding the iptables modules that CSF was requesting and still got errors... so it's HG that has to add those stuff, as far as my testing and diagnostics has told me.

We've created a peer support area for our Linux VPS BETA ( http://forums.hostgator.com/linux-vps-support-f40.html )

Please post any VPS related support questions in that thread for assistance.

I am very interested in a VPS with HostGator. I currently have a couple with two different providers. Xen is definitely the superior VPS implementation. Both providers that used Virtuoso did not configure swap space. When a client performs an action that requires more memory than you have in ram, it causes your virtual server to crash.

HostGator's reseller packages are some of the best in the industry, I am sure their VPS offerings will be up to the same quality.

I am so happy that hostgator is going to have vps. I have been wanting to go that direction. As long as support will be available to help me with vps when it comes available, I will be changing over to it once we can change from a reseller account that is.

Is there any chance that you'll offer cheaper non-managed VPS? I would love to use HostGator VPS since I'm already testing some VPS providers because you didn't (until now), but the cost for managed VPS is pretty high for me.

PS: I agree with the Xen request.

Is there a comparison table somewhere that describes the +/- between VPS, dedicated and shared?

In the context of HostGator, of course.

Just moved one of my domain to a VPS host. Not even a month yet but they wanted me to upgrade to another plan already. If this is the case, I will migrate back to HG as long as the pricing is fine for my budget.

Good to know that HG is getting VPS - I'm can't get some of the more "powerful" packages like OTRS or RT (and by extension RTFM) running on business shared packages...

I'm just waiting for the final specs and pricing to come out...

No there isn't at this time, but that sounds like a great idea. I'll see if we can get something like that setup when we are ready for production.
