Default VPS Hosting from HostGator

*** VPS BETA TESTING IS NOW CLOSED ***
*** Feel free to continue the discussion ***

HostGator has been in the process of releasing VPS hosting, and we’re happy to announce it’s coming soon.

What is VPS?
VPS, or virtual private servers, is a great bridge between Shared Hosting and Dedicated Servers. Basically it’s a way for one server to have multiple operating systems running on it. If you get a VPS account with HostGator, you will receive super-user access (read: root) and your very own operating system installation on the server. Essentially it’s like having your very own dedicated server for a fraction of the cost.

What are the Details of HostGator’s VPS?
We’re still ironing out some nitty-gritty details, but I can say that these spec’s will, most likely, be what is released.
-Fully Managed VPS Hosting (complete with HostGator 24/7 Support)
-Software: Linux OS / cPanel & WHM Control Panel w/ Virtuozzo
-Pricing: From $40 to $150 per month (no contracts, no set up fees)
-IP’s: Each VPS will come with 2 to 8 Dedicated IP’s with the option to purchase more at a special rate
-RAM: From 256 MB (1 GB Burstable) to 4 GB (8 GB Burstable) DDR3 Memory
-CPU: From 1 to 4 CPU’s at 2.4Ghz+ (Hyperthreading, Intel Nehalem)
-Hard Drive: 6 Drives in a RAID 10 array (This is a much better setup than other VPS offerings from competitors as it alleviates the weakest bottleneck with VPS, the IO throughput)
Even though HostGator is just releasing VPS, many of our people here have extensive experience with them (5+ years), so we’re confident that we will be able to extend the same reliability, support offered with our shared/reseller/dedicated hosting with our VPS Hosting.

Can I upgrade my existing Shared or Reseller Hosting account to VPS?
We will be able to migrate over any Shared Hosting account (Hatchling, Baby, Swamp) at no charge. We are still working out the details for migrating over Reseller accounts to VPS, if they choose to upgrade. More details on that as we get closer to launch.

When can we expect this to be launched?
We’ve literally completed the hardware and software aspects. Right now it’s just a matter of negotiating deals with licensing companies to get the best rates.

This should bring HG many more customers and should fill the void between reseller and dedi customers for you.

Great news indeed, VPS seems to be the direction a lot of companies are moving towards these days even in house.

Thanks

I'm actually was looking around to get a VPS. If the rate is good enough I'll surely get one

Edit: But I hope the "soon", won't take as much time as other "soons" j/k

This is great news, as I have been playing with a VPS with another provider and could move it to HG along with my account I already have at HG

.

OH SHOOT. If HostGator sets up VPS solutions, then I'll go for a VPS, provided it's got reasonable specs.

I've been waiting for this, hoping that the VPS solutions would come into play before I made my move to a dedicated server.

Looking at the date as to when this thread was created... I must say, I probably have good timing.

We are going to start a small beta test for the VPS service. If you would like to test our VPS service, please PM me.

The specs we are going to offer will be the same or similar to what our middle plan will be.
---
Disk = 50GB
Bandwidth = 750GB
RAM = 1GB (2GB Burstable)
CPU = 2 CPUs @ 2.4GHz+

This beta won't include Cpanel on the VPS.

Got the VPS.

I must say, WOW, that was quick.

I'll be playing with the VPS and seeing what I can do with it.

cPanel is on the VPS, so it's working... but in trial mode. That's fine with me, until Hostgator gets it licensed properly.

I'll be checking it out and posting back results in a different thread... (Suggestions for location of said thread please?)

Ewwww.... That VPS is running Virtuozzo. Hostgator, please consider Xen for your VPS packages so we can modify our kernels!

I've upgraded you to the middle plan, which is the plan I meant to select to begin with.
