Default Voice servers - Mumble.

Hey guys... I already have one of your reseller packages for web... and I love being here.

But here is something I feel there is a real lack of in the internet world... something I am specifically looking for.

There is the program called mumble... it has a server component called murmur and it's open source and on sourceforge.net. This program is a VOIP solution... like Ventrillo or teamspeak... except that it runs well on both WINDOWS and LINUX. The other 2 programs barely run on linux and have to be run in WINE and use more cpu and ram and require more tweaking as a result... more than what most linux gamers want to put into it.

I have done a fairly large amount of searching for voice servers... and specifially mumble servers.

Ventrillo and team speak servers seem to average about $5-6/mth for a 10 person server... I have seen them as low as $2 and as high as $10... but most about $4.99 and $5.99.

I have found 3 sites that offer mumble hosting.

2 of these sites has web pages that were DOWN when I got there... IMHO that's just a bad omen... supposedly the big one is www.mumbletower.com and it's STILL down after 3 days.
www.Mumblex.com and it's down also... STILL.

I found one other site http://www.ratedare.com/
They host for $2 for 10 users... but... lol... look at that site... I don't trust that the server would be stable, configured in a timely manner, or that my billing information would be secure.

So currently I have no permanent mumble server providers to choose from.. when technically the OS and the application are FREE... and both allowed to be resold as a service commercially for profit. This is ironic to me... no one wants to make a profit from me by selling me free stuff that's been repackaged... even if I am willing to pay the same amount as non-free servers like ventrillo or teamspeak.. those people have to pay for a license.

I know... I could just set it up at home... but you know... I don;t have a spare PC laying around that I can install Linux on... I don't want another PC at my house... I don't know much at all about Linux... and since I support a windows environment I don't really care too much to learn Linux. I also don't like hosting stuff using DHCP even though I know about Dynip, TZO, and no-ip... it's just too unstable even if it is just for me and my friends.

So have you put any thought into hosting a VOIP and would you consider mumble if you did? You would have like NO competition right now...

HostGator having already a marketing relationship with VOIPo i am not sure if they would have any interest in puting VOIP over their own shared servers, even if it is not for telephony, and mostly because of the ressources demand for this. You could easily do it yourself with a dedicated server and if you do not expect more than 10 connections, even the 75$/month unmanaged one could be enough.

It would be interesting to read the HostGator response to your suggestion.

P.S. In case you do not know about all the posting done by VOIPoTim here is a thread : http://forums.hostgator.com/showthread.php?t=29258
