Default VmWare

Hey,

I'm looking into the top range dedicated server with hg... I already have a dedicated server but its the low end one.

My question is this: I have been trialing VmWare.. which I must say is outstanding (www.vmware.com) They have now release VmWare ESXI.. Basically its a tiny linux OS with thier Virtulisation stuff imbedded. I would love to install this OS on a HG server. Thats my first question is this possible. There are no licensing issues.

My next question is: Once installed I would like to create a virtual PC with CentOS and cpanel.. If I was to provide all the work would HG be able to assist me with a license of cpanel (I can install CentOS). If not I'll have to get a kick ass machine with someone else like RackSpace.. but I would love to keep them together if poss as the poor lil servers would be like brothers lol

Many Thanks
Toby

Definitely email sales with this question. I don't know how much they're going to want to help with that kind of setup.

The big problem your going to have is the hardware.

ESXi works only for SATA and SAS drives for the VM's.

It also only works with a very narrow set of SATA and SAS.

You will want to get very detailed info on the hardware from your choice of hosters.

I probably would suggest that you purchase the hardware your self to be sure it meets all the ESXi requirements, install the base system that you want ESXi, CentOS VM etc.. then ship it off to your hosting.

This would be a CO LOCATION aka co-lo option v. a dedicated and I don't know that HG does that.....but if your looking to got with the ESXi setup this may be your best route.

I deal with VMW on a daily basis and while I love that the ESXi hypervisor has went free (as an enticement to get you to pay for more features) it has specific hardware requirements that hurt it in the low end of the server market. but then again thats not really been its target audience and if they don't target it now other options will take this market with an inferior product.

Thanks a lot for your help on this

I have been in communication with HG on this.. I will check the specs of the HG servers to check they are ok.

They haven't said yes, or no as of yet. The reason I want a HG server is so I can have the benefits of thier support, as one Virtual Drive would be CentOSD with Cpanel (hopefully) This is supported by Cpanel

If I can't get this I will keep the server I currently have with HG and go with Rackspace who do offer virtualisation servers

I think you may find, if they allow this, it will be on a unmanaged server only and support would be very limited.

However the above is just my personal opinion and you should wait out for a more definitive answer from Hostgator

Yeah I think your right.. but thats ok

All I need from HG is what server they run the Pro Dedicated serve on, or if they can supply a server that meets the criteria..

I'll keep you all posted
