Default Video Streaming

Hi, I have got a reseller account with HG, but I'm also interested in the "grossly oversold" webhosting account and their ability to have video/audio streaming.

Quote:
We support Windows Media, Quicktime, and Real Media player allowing you to run streaming audio and video.
Does this mean, I can upload my videos (which would be my own or I have permission to use) and then use a video streaming script to have a makeshift "Online TV Station" ???

If so, I wouldn't be surprised if this is abused, but I'm really interested in a reply from HG

Thanks,

Tobias

I think this is only allowed on dedicated servers as it uses alot of resources and other sites on the same server would be affected.

Well in the feature list on the Web Hosting section, the Video Streaming is a "ticked" feature. I guess I'm also interested in what "scale" HG allows streaming?

I believe what they are referring to as streaming is actually "progressive download", not true streaming, as cleanxhost says, it would be rather resource intensive to have actual streaming on a shared environment.

if you're interested in a reply from hg, send an email to sales [at] hostgator.com. As this is a peer support forum, most of the replies you'll get here are from other HG customers. While HG staff does post on the forums, it's not the most expiedient way to get official responses.

Good afternoon tobiaslw,

We will let you stream video, audio, etc. Just be aware that the servers are configured for webhosting, and not commercial streaming. If there are too many connections being held open by clients streaming video, or if the load starts to get too high, you will need to consider a dedicated server (probably 10-20 connected streams will start to impact server performance.)

Hi, thanks for your reply. This was the answer that I expected, however, even though I have no intentions of having a large audience, I feel that a small note on the features page might prevent this question from arising again.

Thanks again,

Tobias.

So you don't offer Windows Media Services streaming on your Shared accounts -- you just offer "Web server" streaming, which ends up downloading the whole file to their internet cache.

Just wanted to double-check.

I guess Mr. Spammer finally got banned, cause I don't see his post.

In any case, I am glad to hear that I can stream audio and video on a small scale. I have a few small educational audio files I want to make available on my site, and perhaps a couple videos. I want to make them available to download or stream as the viewer prefers.

I am quite sure there would never be even 5 streams going at once (probably not even 5 per day, maybe not even per week).

However, just to be on the safe side, can someone tell me if there's a way to limit the number of streams (and all types of downloads) at one time?

Thank you.
