Thumbs down Very bad experience

Trying to get information for transfering a live ecommerce site to my reseller acct at HostGator. There appears to be no way to create a temporary ftp address that I can use to move the site over to. When I created the account it asked for the domain name and when I provided the name it created an ftp login of ftp.domainname.com which basically hooks me up with the current live host. This system is very different that hosting services that use H-Sphere which issues a temporay login for a site and allows you to get things setup prior to transfering the domain name. Any way here is the text of the chat I had with lea in support. I finally just had to give up. If I can't resolve this problem with HostGator this will be a deal killer for me.

You''re connected to operator - lea
lea: How may i assist you
User: I'm creating an account for an existing domain that will be transfered over. How can I ftp to the account? When I go to ftp.domainname.com I'm taken to the current live host.
lea: May i know the doamin name
User: www.paintdpony.com
lea: And the ip address assigned to the domain name
User: There is no specific ip. it is on a virtual server
User: Hello, anybody home
lea: yes
User: Does not the system issue a temporary address to transfer the site and get it setup until the domain is actually transfered?
lea: I CHECKED THE DOAMIN
lea: but it seems its not on our server
User: Exactly, I want to transfer it to your server but this is a live site and I need to get it setup with an https connection and certificate prior to transfering the domain. I don't want to take the site down
lea: You mean the site is using a ssl certificate
lea: Hello
User: Let me try to explain this more clearly. The site is live on another host. I want to provide it with an ssl certificate. That is why I want to move it to your servers. I need to be able to get the site moved over ant the certificate set up before I actually transfer the domain name. This should not be that difficult. I'm sure you have many customers that transfer live sites but require a temporary name for it until the domain is transferred
lea: Yhank you for the explanation
lea: Thank you
lea: You can signup with the hostgator .com
lea: And upload the site contents using FTP
lea: Then you can apply for the SSL certificate for this doamin
lea: domain*
lea: Once you change the name servers to that of ours and your site works with hostgator server
lea: We will install the SSL
User: I don't follow you. I have a reseller account on hostgator and would like to transfer this site to my reseller site. I already set it up once but because it asked me for the domain name during the setup it created an ftp login as ftp.paintdpony.com and that is the same ftp access for the current live site. If you are having aproblem grasping what I am trying todo could you please put me on with someone who has mre knowledge in this area?
lea: Tell me wher did you specify you have a account with hostgator
lea: you are not giving proper information
lea: and you asdsume that we have to know evrey thing
lea: evry thing
lea: everything*
User: Look, This is not rocket science You should at least have enough information to help me move a live site from another host to my reseller account at hostGator (my reseller account is www.solahost.com). I have to do this by creating a temporary a tempory domain name, on hostgator and I can't see how to do this.

Well I solved the problem myself. You can create a phony domain name and then ftp to the site using your reseller ip address and the new site username password. As far as I can tell this isn't mentioned in the documentation anywhere and I'm sorry that the support person I chatted with did not have enough knowledge to explain this. Aside from the knowledge level of this particular support person I am happy with the system

Hi yumanoid

I had the same problem to resolve and all I did was to create a hosting package for the domain using WHM autopilot then I did a transfer of the site back up ready for the change of nameservers (scheduled for the quietest part of the week) and voila the whole thing was seamless.

I found the information on uploading pending transfer on the reseller's faq section of the FAQ page in support.

The only thing I did was to place an extra graphic on the index page so I could see when propogation had settled down.

I also get frustrated when waiting for responses to YIM but I am finding HostGator to be really helpful considering I am new to reselling.

Keep it up guys

I see nothing wrong with this chat. The tech asked for your ip address that ip is what is used to upload when using ftp before dns proprogates. The link we say you must read in our welcome email also provides this information.
http://www.hostgator.com/resellerinfo.shtml

The tech then asked for your account information to try and look up your ip address to give you to use but it doens't look like it was provided.

I've seen some bad chats but this one seems to be good =) Although the tech you spoke with could have done a better job explaining how ips work for you rather then just trying to get your ip to help walk you through it.
