hi, first of all I'm Chilean and English is not my primary language, so I'll try to make it clear.
I'm new to hostgator, and I got here cause I had a 5gbfree account, were I have my blog: http://frenesic.5gbfree.com/blog The thing is that I want to move the site from 5gbfree to here. BUT, 1. When upgrading they asked me if I wanted to keep my domain (http://frenesic.5gbfree.com) and I said yes! but now I've realized that if I move my site, I won't be able to have the same domain, cause all of my files woul'd be here. 2. If I messed it up with the whole domain name thing, can I change it? 3. If that is possible, can I pick whatever I want for my domain? or do I have to buy it. This is my first paid host, so I'm a little confused. please help!

Hello sir,
Whatever domain you wish to change it to will need to be a registered domain name, which means you must purchase it and point it to your account's nameservers. I hope this clears things up for you. |

mm, no... I'm sorry but it doesn't.
My question is: I have a free domain by 5gbfree: http://frenesic.5gbfree.com and when asked in the purchase of my babycroc pack, I gave that domain. the thing is that the domain I'm talking about is not a paid one... is that bad? if it is bad... can I change it for a paid one? how do I do it? and why when I try to get in to my domain (http://frenesic.5gbfree.com) I get a: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server message? I'm really sorry if this is a basic question, but I really don't know how this works... Last edited by frenesic; 05-30-2007 at 11:03 PM. |

hey, me again...
I'm getting tired of not knowing anything about how this works! I am soooooo lost! Don't even know were to post my questions!! ok, let's not freak out. The thing is... I just wanted the server to put my blog in it! I have a wordpress blog and I want to move it here. How do I do it!? Do I have to create a FTP account? (there are so much questions in my mind!) What are the first steps to get my hostgator working? what's the answer for my question above? (I mean the free domain question) how do I know which one of the urls you gave me is my host!? (the one that the ftp client asks for) How do I install wordpress in this thing? that's it (for now) I'm shure I'll have more questions aaaahhh! I thought I had the whole server thing figured it out with my old server, but now I feel like the dummiest woman alive! Please forgive me for my basic questions but just give me some information to get started... |

You can't use the domain name http://frenesic.5gbfree.com, because the "domain name" part of that is 5gbfree.com, which is not owned by you. You need to choose a new domain name.

The first thing you will need to do is to register a domain and set the nameservers to the ones listed in the welcome email you received from HG. You can do that with any registrar such as Godaddy, Enom, etc. Once you have registered the domain and set the nameservers you would need to open a Help Desk ticket with HG and request having the domain changed to the one you register.
You can access the cPanel and use FTP using the IP address given in your welcome email. WordPress is in Fantastico in your cPanel so you could install it by clicking on the Fantastico icon in your cPanel and follow the instructions there. The 403 Error is due to something on the 5gbfree.com account. You would need to contact them to find out what is going on there. |

DO THIS FIRST!!!!!! as of Thurday, 10:04 EDT the domain name frenesic.com was available.... go somewhere cheap and register this.... or something else you want. this is called a top level domain (or tld) in the form of "yourdomain.com", or .net, or .whatever. you will OWN this and can move it wherever you want.
you currently have a subdomain space at 5gbfree.com. subdomains are in the form of "subdomain.maindomain.com" you do not own that, 5gbfree.com is letting you "use" that namespace after you register your domain, wait maybe an hour or so your confirmation email and it will give you instructions on how to change your nameservers - point domain to a host. we will help you with that part next BUT GRAB YOUR DOMAIN NAME FIRST

OK!!
I now have a paid domain!!!!!! thanks! www.frenesic.com but, and here is the sad part... I really don't know how to use it! I already did the nameserver thing (asingning them to my domain) but that is as far as I got. I just want to move my blog (wordpress) to hostgator... That all I want, after that I guess I'll be learning some stuff on my own. but I'm still completely lost, I need some more help You have been really helpful by the way! thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! (my domain name is still frenesic.5gbfree.com. I already submited a ticket to change this, but I'm waiting for response) Last edited by frenesic; 05-31-2007 at 06:28 PM. |

Now that you have a domain and have the nameservers set you need to contact technical support here and ask them to change the domain on the account. That will need to be done so that when you enter the domain it will point to your site here. You will then be able to access your cPanel using http://frenesic.com/cpanel and can use the Fantastico option to install WordPress.
The old domain is still throwing an error message for me. You will need to contact technical support there to find out what the problem is. |

Are you sure you have set the nameservers correctly? Did you get those nameservers from a Hostgator email? An email you got after signing up for hostgator as frenesic.com?
If you originally signed up for hostgator with a different domain, email support@hostgator.com telling them you want to switch your new domain to frenesic.com.

yes, those are the mane server that I got from the welcom mail from HG, unless they change with the change of the domain name, but the mail I got after the domain name change didn't say anything about new name servers...
Changing the domain name was fast, faster than I thought it would be... Now my domain is www.frenesic.com and when I go to it, it takes me to my host gator website startup guide. that is a good thing right? Now... what I want to do is not to install wordpress, but move my wordpress blog to this server. I've been reading all the documentation there is about it in the wordpress site, but I'm still a little confused... I backed up all of my blog files and my database, but I don't know were to put it. I want my blog's url to be www.frenesic.com do I have to upload all the files in to my root? where does the database go to? where do I have to upload it? when I move my blog, I want to do an upgrade of the wordpress software, from 2.0 to 2.2. Is it better to do it all at ones or wait till I have the blog working at HG? again thanks a lot! you've been so helpful!!!

Hello,
1st) Yes it is a good thing that you can see the HG start-up guide , basically when your account is created there is a default index file (home page file) which you need to remove before uploading your blog. 2nd) UPLOADING You need to upload all your files in the "public_html" folder (like I said remove the start-up guide page first) 3rd) IMPORTING DATABASE HG has a great selection of video tutorials at hostgator.com/tutorials.shtml - they have a specific one on creating: MySQL Databases CLCK HERE TO WATCH. Also watch: Managing a MySQL database in PHPMyAdmin CLCK HERE TO WATCH. 4th) CONFIGURATION FILE You will need to change the configuration file (wp-config.php) so your blog can connect to the database, use these details: Database Name: the name you called your database when creating it Database Username: you can use you cPanel username Database Password: You can use your cPanel Password Database Host: "localhost" 5th) UPGRADE to 2.2 Yeah I would recommend you focus on getting your existing version installed and then upgrade afterwards. Regards, Steve Xx

Thanks! I have all of my files in the puclic html directory and I imported the database...
there is only one problem now: I get this message when trying to visit my blog (www.frenesic.com) Can’t select database We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the frenesic_frenesic database. * Are you sure it exists? * On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem? If you don't know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums. very strange... am I doing something wrong? (this is what I did, step by step: backup my database backup my blog files import the database to HG upload my blog files to HG (public_html) fix the wp-config file. that's it.) Is there something wrong? thanks!!!! again!!!!! this is the best forum I've been ever!

I think this whole thread deserves a Croc because it shows how helpful this forum can be. Matt, Larry, Steve and Sam talked the OP through a setup that involved a fair number of concepts and potential pitfalls.
What I'm getting at is that some complaints about forum helpfulness and friendliness (i.e., lack of) might be misguided... |

else you can use the fantastico to setup wordpress,.. which should be the recommended way.

Anything through Fantastico is definitely not the recommended way. It's the easiest, but for many reasons you should just learn to install it manually, as you've done.

Congrats frenesic, and welcome!
I'm glad all of us could assist you through the process. Quote:
I second this, Fantastico is incredibly outdated and there are many other reasons why you shouldn't use it. Quote:

I think there is a small element of truth in the "lack of" in that: Helpfulness: topics sometimes go off topic Friendliness: I posted quite a harsh post the other day about the upgrades, and I’ve seen a few others since I’ve been part of the forum. I think it can be easy to get annoyed at comments people make on certain subjects. But for the most part these are rare and I don't think you could justify a complaint about it. Lastly, frenesic if you ever need help with anything else you know where to come! It was a pleasure assisting you, as (a long time ago) I was in the same position. Regards, Steve Xx
