Default Using PHP 5 on a PHP 4 server

Please note, we are currently working on the transition to PHP5 as the default php engine for all shared/reseller accounts. See here and here.

All of our shared and reseller servers now have both PHP 4 and PHP 5 installed. The cPanel software will always reflect your current PHP version in the lower left General Server Information box. (NOTE: If you are on php4 by default and use the .htaccess edit to use php5, cPanel will still reflect version 4 as that is the default server engine. However, php5 can still be used for your scripts.)

If you are using php4 by default and wish to use php5, you can easily configure your account to do so by adding a line to the apache .htaccess file for your account. For the primary domain name on an account, the .htaccess file should be located in the public_html folder. If it does not exist, you may create a text file called .htaccess.

Place the following command in the file, save it, and you should be all set:

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php

***Please note, if php4 is the default engine, PHP 5 will not work work using a temporary URL. PHP 5 is only accessible when using the domain name to access your account.***

If you have any questions or encounter any issues at all, please don't hesitate to contact us via LiveChat by clicking on the Live Chat image in the upper right corner of the page, or via ticket by emailing support@hostgator.com or submitting a ticket at http://tickets.hostgator.com .

Thank you for choosing Hostgator!

Maybe this belongs elsewhere, and if so please move it, but how about a topic addressing the reverse (using PHP4 although the default is now PHP5), as well as how and when that will change when PHP4 is removed from the (Shared, in my case) servers?

I'm an Admin on a Forum that must use PHP4. We're in-process of an upgrade but I've seen no firm cutoff date, or a start-time for when PHP4 will finally be removed. I heard "sometime in August" but would like to know more and suspect others would also?

Thanks in advance.

Hi RainbowViper,

That's a great question.

For those of you still on a dual-environment server, you'll use this to go from php5 to php4:

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php4 .php

Regarding the updates for php5, as of 08/20/2008, all Shared servers are php5 ONLY. We have a list of Reseller servers as well which are php5 only so if you're a Reseller and need to know if you are php5 only, visit us in LiveChat or submit a ticket via email to support@hostgator.com or via http://tickets.hostgator.com to ask us to check this for you.

We will be removing php4 once the upgrades are done on the older servers, but I do not have an estimated time as to when this will happen. I recommend keeping up with the 2 forum posts linked in the "Here" links in my original post as we should be updating those as we progress on the php5 upgrades.

Thanks again and if I missed any of your questions, just let me know!

Jess

Errr.... I think you mean:

"We will be removing php4 once the upgrades are done on the older servers, but I do not have an estimated time as to when this will happen."

rather than "...removing php5 once..."?

And I really, really *NEED* to know when PHP4 will be removed from the server on the site I mentioned. If it gets removed without any warning, our site is dead in the water. How can I get SOME idea, at least, when that will happen?

And thanks for the answers so far!

Virago,

I just filed a support ticket about when my servers (Gator52, Gator396) will get cut off. Yes, I should have done so sooner, but got busy with real life.

You might do the same, but I suspect there won't be an exact answer. If we don't get upgraded, our Forum will be dead in the water when PHP4 goes away.

What's that I smell? Could it be..... SPAM?

Post your crap somewhere else, klmn381. Preferably in China, where that site is located.
