Arrow upgrading from shared to semi dedicated server

ok i'm currently on the hatchling plan. if i wanted to upgrade to a semi dedicated server, can hostgator do this for me? And what is the cost?

And will I lose all my info on my shared server if i upgrade to a semi dedicated server? I currently have a phpscript directory website on my shared server,so would it be possible to Clone my current servers hard drive, and load it onto the semi dedicated server's hard drive so i don't have to install my script again? If this is possible, what is the cost and how long would it take and how long would my website be Offline for?

Thanks

Yep.. hostgator can easily do this without you loosing data and your site will only be down while the DNS works it's magic

Just to add, you can expect no downtime, but it may take a few days for the move to actually happen.

Wont there be downtime during DNS Propagation?

Yeah there would be, because Daabomb would have to change his domains nameservers to those of the new server and the domain would have to then point to the new server.

However for me Propagation has never taken any longer than 20-30 mins (despite it's commonly said it takes 24-48)

so realistically Daabomb isn't going to notice it.

Regards, Steve Xx

There wouldn't be downtime, just keep both plans active until the propagation finishes. This way no matter what DNS information a person sees, they'll see your site-- either on your shared or your dedicated.

Which is fine as long as the site is static: no databases, forums, etc.

If there's a database, i'd just point the database address from localhost to the new IP, and enable the old IP access to the database on the new server. Then people will see the same database no matter what server they end up on.

Domain names propagate in about 30 minutes now. If it took 3 days last time, then your ISP is caching DNS lookups. Expect it will take 3 days this time too.

You can't. However, you don't need to use your ISP's recursive DNS lookups.

http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/recursivedns/

There are also several free services:

Yep, spend hours on hold and talking to people who swear they don't cache dns or don't know what that is. Then after getting the right person that understands, hope and pray it doesn't revert to the old dns at another point in time.

Just my experience when I had problems with Comcast a few years back....I had to call and request the flush every couple days and finally just gave up and switched isps

so how does hostgator do this? do they just remove the hard drive from my current shared server, then add that hard drive to the semi dedicated server? Or do the use norton ghost to mirror my current shared server hard drive and then put that mirror onto the semi dedicated server hard drive?
And would all of this be able to be done when going from a shared server to a DEDICATED server if I chose a dedicated server instead of a semi dedicated?

No, those wouldn't really be optimal solutions. Especially that first one-- what would all the other people on the shared server think?

They will most likely scp or rsync a new cpanel full backup from your old plan to your new one, and restore the backup. This retains all settings.

Yes, it would be a similar process.

Plan costs are located on the following page:
http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

I thought HostGator just upgrades your account and transfers everything over to your Semi-Dedicated for you... have you asked them if they do that?
