Default Upgrade To Dedicated Server Questions

I have been a Hostgator customer for around 18 months without any problems. I have 4 x shared accounts and now I'm having problems as my sites have out grown the shared accounts so I have ordered a dedicated server. Can someone please answer these questions for me please.

I have 4 shared server accounts and I would like all these transfered to my new dedicated server. Will Hostgator sort this out for me? Is there a charge for this?

On my 4 shared server accounts I have sql databases with the same name on different shared server accounts. What will happen when these are transfered to my dedicated server? Will I have to change the sql file names?

My main site has been suspended by Hostgator due to high cpu usage. How long after my dedicated server is ready will Hostgator be able to transfer my shared server accounts to my new server? My main site is down so I need it back online ASAP.

When all my 4 shared server accounts have been transfered to my dedicated server will I be able to cancel the shared server accounts?

Do Hostgator backup servers? Is there any company that also offers a backup service so I can be extra sure my date is safe?

My server was ordered first thing this morning. When do you think my server will be ready?

Thanks.

HG backs up shared servers once a week but not dedicated. If you search these forums there are many threads discussing the fact that you must have your own backups for numerous reasons.

Hopefully gwyneth will chime in here as she has some fantastic links relating to backups in the forum. (thanks gwyneth)

Yes, many here use www.bqbackup.com

The rest of your questions are best answered by HG directly. Email them at sales at hostgator dot com or give them a call.

HG will move your accounts if you request it but you can also do it yourself once your have access to the dedicated server. There is an option in WHM when logged in as root to copy a file from another server.

HG does not back up dedicated servers, only the shared accounts. I chose to purchase an additional hard drive on our dedicated and back up to it in addition to a remote backup such as BQBackup.

Sorry, forgot about that. I have corrected my post above.

Hey ramchip,

You'll wonder why you didn't move up before. If you have full forum access, you should start reading the Linux Dedicated Server category. Lots of relevant info. (If you don't, pm the gator mentioned in the sticky at the top of this category, with your domain name.)

Serra has an invaluable sticky at the top of the dedi category, and, once again, I'll cite

Dedi, set, go! The DediKiddy(tm) threads

Regarding backups, I believe David means:

Backup resources II (HG specific)

(for which the only credit I can take is for assembling, not the info itself--kind of like someone who uses a paint by number picture.)

Do I need to order another hard drive to use BQBackup? Is so what is the cost for this?

BQbackup is an outside service to which you ftp your backup...it can be set up automatically, and doesn't cost much.

It's a good idea to keep the backup at a second place...just as a precaution.

My data will be around 5GB. How long will this take to FTP to BQBACKUP?

"ftp" may not be the correct term--it goes from server to server over the internet backbone.

The bqbackup site, reached through the link above, has info about its compression technology and transfer methods.
