Hello HG ;-)
First, I have been a HostGator customer for years.. shared and reseller. Great hosting company. But, I just opened a Business account (shared) and I wondering about the unlimited space and bandwidth... We have just 1 site, so the 1 IP is just fine. We do not sell and downloads, hosting video files, etc. Not an ecommerce website, just a shopping portal site. Having said that, if the website gets very busy (hoping it will!), at what point do I consider a dedicated server? Why go dedicated if the hosting account in unlimited? I realize that there is a limit (some huge number), but I'm just trying to get some insight so I don't get an email one day saying the site is down due to using excessive resources... just trying to plan ahead. Thanks, Rob Thank you |

Because only bandwidth and space are (sort of) unlimited. There are other things, like cpu usage, inode usage and processes that are not unlimited.

Most likely you are going to be caught by the CPU usage, than inodes. It is hard to relate the CPU use with trafic, it depends on your site - script, database etc. To give a rough idea, something like 100 GB use per month should be the maximum you can expect on a shared host. That actually is a too big traffic for a small shared account.

I will definately be under inode limit, but I didn't think of CPU use. Thanks!

If you are sharing high resolution photos is that known to cause a site to go down? Or is it the use of scripts (like in WordPress) or forums that would cause this problem?
My site is occasionally inaccessible due to internal server error, so I'm wondering if it's a limitation with shared hosting. |

What is the server error?

I get the "500 Internal Server Error" message. I haven't saved the error message so that's as much info as I can give.

Server Error 500 can happen when you go over your allotted process limit. If you ask Hostgator support they can look in the logs and tell you if that's the reason. Permissions issues can trigger 500 errors, but I wouldn't expect those to appear sometimes-- either file permissions are wrong, or they're not.

What the allotted process limit on a shared plan and how can you plan for not reaching it? I'm planning to set up a WordPress site and don't want the possibility of reaching some limit that I don't understand. |

I suggest using the WP Super Cache plugin.
