Default Transfering a domain to HG, is there a delay on email.

I'm about to start out with a Hatchling account and intend to transfer my domain name over to HG (I have read not to cancel my current domain registration (1&1) until everything is set up).

What I want to know is, once I've got everything set up (I've found the nameserver setting in 1&1 cp) and I've filled out the form on hg/transfer.php, will there be a downtime on being able to receive emails using my domain email addresses? Do I just continue to use my current email settings in outlook until it stops working one day then change the settings over to HG's settings.

I've had the domain registered with 1&1 for years and this will be my first transfer, so I'm just checking for any possible pitfalls before I go ahead and place my order with HG.

Thanks for your help, James.

I think you're confusing domain registration and domain hosting. You can keep the domain registered at 1&1 and use HG hosting (there are many good reasons to keep registration and hosting at two different companies).

If you do that, you'd sign up at HG for hosting, get the welcome email, have HG transfer the content, then change the nameservers, and finally, close the 1&1 hosting account.

Even if you do decide to switch the domain registration to HG, depending on when it expires, it makes sense to change the hosting first and after that goes ok switch the registration.

Whatever you do, just remember that switching registration and hosting are two distinctly different processes.

Hi all, just wanted to close this thread with how everything worked out for me. I had got a little confused about the site / domain hosting and wasn't sure how my email would get transferred over.

Once I'd signed up for my hatchling account and received my email I logged into cPanel, created my main email account (mainaccount@mydomain.com), the same as my 1&1 email address. The account settings were 'mail.mydomain.com'.

I then copied the nameserver details into the NS section of my 1&1 control panel. At this point outlook is still successfully receiving from 1&1, but returning an error for the HG account.

After about 20hrs, the domain name had populated and my HG default page appeared at www.mydomain.com. I then opened outlook again and all accounts are receiving successfully.

I did not notice any downtime with my emails, only having to be aware of when the DNS records had updated. Thanks to gwyneth for the help, and I hope this saves someone a question further down the line.

J.

p.s. I'm loving this service, so much better than other hosts I've used before, thumbs up to HG
