Talking Transfer

First off, I'm currently a Host Gator customer and I have been very pleased with the service!

Ok, now my real question. I've recently talked my father in law into switching from his old host to Host Gator because of the better deal, up-time, and features that HG offers. My question is, he just wants to transfer his domain name to Host Gator. Everything that he has on his old host, he doesn't want anymore. He just wants to take his domain name and make a fresh start with Host Gator. How would he go about doing this?

He can easily keep his domain here where it is, and just switch the nameservers to hostgator. Remember that domain and hosting are two different things.

If you want the domain name away from the old company, just find any domain registrar you like (godaddy.com, enom.com, whoever) and initiate the transfer. Once it's done you'll set the nameservers to the ones HG provides.

Ok, he's currently with godaddy.com but wants to change. So he will just need to cancel his hosting there but continue to keep his domain registered through godaddy and then sign up at Host Gator with his existing domain?

Yep! Then you'll just change the nameservers at GoDaddy to point to the nameservers HG gives him in the welcome email. Pretty easy to do.

Just make sure he is the legal owner of the domain,
Do a whois (www.whois.net) on the domain if hes name is there then hes the legal owner.
If not you might need to ask Godaddy to get rights to it.

His company name shows up as owner, so it should be fine. We'll be getting the hosting changed over to HG probably tomorrow. Thanks for your help!
