Default Total newbie question...

I just registered with HostGator and elected to transfer over an existing domain to this account. However, in the meantime, I'd like to start uploading some of the sites (to see how they load on HostGator and to get the scripts qorking properly). I'd also like to create some different directories which I would eventually like to make as sub-domains once the main domain has been propogated to the DNS server.

My questions...

1) How do I see the website(s) without the domain working currently?
- I uploaded a test "index.html" file to my "public_html" directory...
- I tried http://iphere/~usernamehere/ and http://70.86.181.34/~username but neither of those worked (my username "sonalyst" in there, obviously)
- NOTE: It says "Cannot find "brentoxley.theplanet.com" when I try?

2) Can I create sub-domains even though my domain has not been transferred over yet?

Sorry for the total newbie questions, but I'm just trying to figure out how to see a darn page come up. Feeling sort of dumb...

Thanks!
- Jamie

Very strange, are you sure about the IP address?

Try using your server name, like impala.websitewelcome.com/~sonalyst

Where you actually use the correct server name.

You should be able to get to the cPanel via the http://IPaddress/cpanel.

It doesn't work without the last slash, i.e. http://iphere/~usernamehere/ works but http://iphere/~usernamehere does not.

Yup, that's what they sent me in my Welcome e-mail. I'm assuming that IP address is just a shared server with a whole slew of accounts on it (I'm just one of many).

How do I find out what server name is associated with...
Server: 70.86.181.34 (Gator45) ?
Is it just http://gator45.hostgator.com ?

Yup, Control Panel works fine using my assigned L/P... Logs in like a champ at http://70.86.181.34/cpanel

Hey, cool... There it is:

http://gator45.hostgator.com/~sonalyst/
http://70.86.181.34/~sonalyst/
NOTE: I needed the trailing slash as was mentioned (thank you quietFinn)...

Just a test page to make sure it was working, and it is... Thank you guys!
