Default Thinking of moving from Bluehost -- couple of questions

Hello,
After quite a few years w/ Bluehost, I've come to understand that they're a bit underhanded in advertising their services (unlimited this and that which is effectively negated by their CPU throttling etc.)

The latest is they've taken away Spamassain. Oh, of course they still advertise it as available, but it's so de-fanged as to be useless. So now I've got roughly a month to find a new provider and hostgator is looking pretty good. Would like to ask a few questions if I might:

Shell access -- I found this site by querying which hosts provide it and this was one of them. Anyone have any problems w/ gator's implementation of the shell? Is it wonky or crippled significantly?

Spamassassin -- already touched on this. To elaborate: would like to be able to run sa-learn myself in a cron job and be able to train my OWN bayes db. OR if this has been roped off as it was at BH, then I'd like to know that I can install my own custom Spamassassin on my personal account.

I'm sure I've got some other stuff to flesh out (it's been a long time since I've gone host hunting) but these are two biggies that I can think of at the moment. I wasn't able to find any of the preceding in any of the FAQs or other documentation.

Thanks!
Trev

I'm also a refugee from BH (used to be a mod on their forums, in fact). I don't use the shell often, but I'm not aware of any restrictions. Best to ask "sales" directly about specifics. Can't say anything about SA, since I don't use it (I do no filtering and, astonishingly, get almost no spam at all - must be due to clean living).

What I can tell you, however, is that my sites are much more responsive here. My shared server is nowhere near being overloaded, whereas on BH, the machine was always on the brink of trouble. The data center's links to the outside world also appear to be more robust.

No regrets about jumping ship.

I don't think of moving to Bluehost. I'll stick with HostGator. Try taking a look at this site, http://best-inexpensive-web-hosting....ost-sucks-scam. This might help.

I use shell a bit here and have never had any problems.

As for Spamassain - I would contact sales for this - sales @ hostgator.com
