Theplanet.com (HG's data center & network provider) has joined Softlayer...
what is that mean for HostGator and for the customers? should be awaiting some new features?

Do we really need yet another thread about the same subject?

Not offended. But this has been discussed in several other threads already. Do a quick search, and you'll find them.

I just moved here from The Planet. I was in a situation where I had to inevitably move/upgrade my server; which would up my price.
They also got rid of the Advanced Services (server management / security auditing) which is a huge blow for me. Once I heard that I'd lose the Advanced Services with a new server, it was an easy jump to Hostgator. |

I take it, then, that Softlayer's advanced monitoring, notification and response (+ $50/mo) does not compare to The Planet's advanced services. And Softlayer has also made it quite clear that, while they will sustain existing The Planet arrangements, all future expansions and upgrades will be done their way.
All things considered, I'd be fairly certain that our friends at Hostgator are smiling at the long-term prospects and customers may not be the only ones making a move.

You're right - absolutely no comparison to The Planet's!
For $55 a month, I had the Monitoring AND security bundle on my server (it was a promo they had shortly after they introduced Advanced Services). The Softlayer arrangement seems to be only monitoring for nearly the same price as both add-on services The Planet offered. My overall server with Hostgator is $10/mo cheaper, I get a similar setup to what I had with The Planet - only real difference being I'm now on a Celeron whereas I was on a Xeon with The Planet. |

Welcome aboard. I'm very confident you won't regret the decision, and if you do decide to upgrade your server later on, it's no problem at all.

That is a considerable difference.

Will my visitors or customers notice? I doubt it.
That's all that matters in my opinion.

Depends on how busy your site is.

Being an ecommerce site, it's probably not as active of a server as most shared hosts. It's the only site on the server.
From my perspective, I notice no difference in the handling of the site since my switch.. other than I have 4gb of memory... only had 2 on my box with The Planet. |

4Gb is certainly much better than 2Gb.
