Switching Hosts

Hi, I'm new here. I am not happy with my current provider, so I'm switching over to Gator. I've heard more positive reviews than negative about the service.

I will be transferring my domain name. Do I sign up first and then transfer it? It is currently online, so I need to have time to inform my visitors of a temporarily shut down.

Do NOT cancel your old hosting account until you have changed DNS and thoroughly inspected your site to ensure everything was transferred properly.

Hi thank you for replying. I am only transferring my domain name. I purchased the baby package and requested the site studio to build a site.

I was told since I'm only transferring my domain name, to use the form on hostgator.com/domain and that I wouldn't get charged for my first transfer. So I did and I did get charged. I can get a refund, so that's okay.

I haven't heard anything yet concerning the transfer and have no idea if I did it correctly.

This is what I've done so far; With the provider where my domain is I unlocked it, made sure my contact info was correct, and set my server names to the ones at host gator.

Then I filled out the transfer a domain form giving the authorization code and submitted it.

Am I suppose to do anything in my control panel, or do I just wait for gator to contact me saying the transfer is complete? I can't access the site studio to build a site until the transfer is complete.
