Default supra possible miracle

They found the original drive and said all user files look good!!!! Everyone Is getting their data back from the 30 days lost when it failed!~~~ something could go wrong but he really knew what he is talking about and was quite confident there won't be problems.

All system files are gone which is fine, since he is going to put new system files on and they can be replaced.

Don't get too excited just yet he said all of all of /sda1 is gone, dev problem and user passwords look to be gone. But hey we had this problem before! Nothing major...

He said it will take roughly an hour and a half. He believes it was a RAM or cpu problem. In any case, we are having the entire machine swapped except for the hard drive.

I will keep everyone posted. I hope we are not all let down again coming back from dead.

Neutral Re: supra possible miracle

Well that's OK news...

But why not swap the hard drive too? Just get out a new hard disk and transfer all the files from the old one to the new one, since the rest of the hardward is being replaced too...

Question - What about all the work we've done in the past 2 days?
I reinstalled a new forum system... and other scripts, do I have to do that AGAIN?!

The hard drive itself is good because we had this problem on multiple brand new hard drives. About content being done in the last few days I am not sure yet. We have to see how this goes first, we are not out of the woods yet.

Post Re: supra possible miracle

Ok, well I would prefer that I just get back the data I had before the second crash... and then you guys allow me to download the backup of the first crash so i can get a few missing files...

Anyways... just want the server up first!

I feel we are back to where we were 3 hours ago. Still waiting... still wanting an ETA... still down.

Can you offer a transfer to your most stable server for us HG?

I found out he met with a hour and a half for the system files to be rebuilt. That has been done and cpanel is installing now. Once done, we should be able to move all sites over I'm not sure how long this will take. I'll update once we start moving the sites.

Then why not ask them? They are supposed to be providing a service here, part of which is surely to tell you what's going on.

And again, can you offer a transfer to your most stable server? If you won't post here, please email. The losses are now stacking up here.

Red face Re: supra possible miracle

It would be nice in the future, if not now, if we could have a server set aside for things like this. We could all add a third name server to our domain registrations, so that when the first two name servers don't resolve to our domain, the third will be pointed to a second server which can at least display a notice page... did that make sense to anyone?

I think it's similar to WinTel's chkdsk or scandisk.

Brent, allow me to offer some advice.
As customers we NEED to know an approximate time when stages of the update will be likely to be completed, so we can pass this onto our customers, and also decide if it is worth perservering with HG or cutting losses and changing hosts. At present I am personally very close to cutting my losses. I have little choice. I like HG, but my customers NEED to know what is happening and presently I look like a right bloody mickey when I cant tell them what is happening in my on business, you dig?
We all have $$$ and rep on the line here. Most of us can handle the outage, so long as you provide the information for us to handle our customers.
It's pretty simple really.

Despite the negative themes, this message is meant as ENCOURAGEMENT. Kick your own asses if you need too!
================================================== =====

Man, you guys are hard to track down! And this forum is the *only* place where there is any kind of presence. My experience over the past week has lead me to believe that with the exception of Brent, Lyron, and maybe Tim, everyone else at HG is mearly a lip-service sales staff in order to maintain a "presence", to keep customers on the hook, with no real authority to solve any customer problems. The word will get out eventually, maybe sooner or later. So, lesson learned: Take care of the business end before marketing and growing too fast...if you don't, you'll just spread the bad word faster.

Brent, I have asked EVERY day since 12 hrs into day one, using every means available to me to get an empty WHM set up on Hostgator on a different server so I could keep hosting with HG. DNS for the new companies have just about finished propagating. But I would still very much appreciate a new server. That's not a unreasonable request, so take care if it personally, now.

I've been with you all for about a year (I think), and everything was great. No. Make that...outstanding, until early December. I did notice problems early in December, but was too busy with my own business to make a change.

There's still some encouragement here, so keep reading...

I do not blame you personally for what has happened Brent & staff, just the situation, and MYSELF more than anything for sticking with HG these past few days. It has been an excellent learning tool for me and has caused me to re-evaluate the way I do business also. I really needed this kick in the butt. You do too! Three months hosting cannot *begin* to re-pay the lost income this week. But don't for ONE more moment feel bad about that...your health is NOT worth this, believe me.

Instead, chalk this one up to experience. Maybe the best thing is to pack up and leave. Learn. Everyone great person fails. Any successful person fails, and MANY more times that you would think. Celebrate effort, not victory. Look at what you've been acble to accomplish.

It won't do you any good to boot your loyal paychecks and purge the server, delete negative posts on forums which are causing you lost business in the short term...word will spread regardless, so I'd encourage you to keep the forum going even though your gut says close it now. Show us what you've learned and the changes you have already put into action.

There are lots of great lessons here...As an example, I learned that I should not have all my eggs in one basket. I now have a primary host, and a second hosting company, installed, ready and waiting for DNS should the need arise. You'll be third in line for during these next 3 months of free service until you demonstrate how you have changed.

Wishing you all the best for success, Kev

Thumbs down Re: supra possible miracle

Tomorrow as in 3 hours from now at midnight, or tomorrow as in tomorrow morning at 8am?

I guess there's not really any point to swtich hosts now... because I'm probably out of business now anyways!

Brent,

Are the problems I am experiencing with my site on Gator10, related in any way to the problems with Supra? My site is intermittently up and down since about 5:00 PM today and all of my sub-domains are dead. Just curious.

All our important sites are now sitting with other hosts: we only have odds and sods here now. What a relief. Pressure off. Our mistake was not doing it earlier, but we got swept along in the 'it will be soon' tide.

This is really depressing. You need a surplus server Brent, which you can xfer to quickly.

At last I can go to bed (3am!).

An excellent assessment Kevin. A problem is an opportunity.

We too have learned. The annoying thing is that we have dozens of hosts, so moving could have started moving in the first hour. But the question is when to press the button. We pressed it way too late, always hoping recovery was around the corner. The value of decent ETA!

I've been asking too for a while. It looks like they just don't want to do it I can only imagine because their servers are chocka.

I too hope that you use this as an opportunity to redefine yourselves HG. Spare capacity is a great starting point, but plenty of work is evidently needed on the infrastructure. It is an opportunity if approached positively.

Brent, I'm having trouble with timezones and your estimation of "tomorrow". I'm figuring its about 3am where you are. Does that mean tomorrow is another 24hrs away?? Can you give an ETA in HOURS, like 5 hours, 24hours etc?
Thanks
