I think Brent though is hoping though that this will solve everything and we will all live happily ever after. It seems rather unlikely to me. Hence, the best thing for the customers is to give us another account and let us run two in tandem until we transfer. That's in HG's power... it's a question of whether they want to. I think it's the least they owe us. |

I'm no wizz on the hardware side of things but certainly a new server sounds like a good option. Most of us are going to have no confidence in the current one even after this issue is resolved. A couple of questions:
To set up accounts on a different server, how long would this be likely to take? Is there a period similar to DNS propagation (24-48 hours) for our nameservers to point to the new server? What exactly is the process? Obviously backups would have to be reinstated onto the new server and I presume reseller accounts could be copied directly onto a new server without the need to set them up manually again?? Can anyone of you hardware wizzes fill in us mere mortals in on the process of switching servers so we can betteer understand this as an option. God I'm lovin my annual holiday this year :| |

It appears it is easy to transfer accounts with WHM/CPanel:

It would have been nice of them to set up a different server or open temp space on another server for us.
Yeah, it would have been a pain in the ass for everyone, but why continue to use a damaged hard drive or server or whatever. Once everyone is on the new server....then rip the bad one apart all you want. like I said...."would have", instead I have the flag pole dangling from my rear.....again. Thanks HG. Here is a new server "name" suggestion... call it...a Yugo or a Geo Metro |

The domain names are already pointing at HG's namservers... so there will be little delay at that end.
It's just a question of whether HG are prepared to do it. My opinion is that it is the least they could do for us in the circumstances. |

If you are right and there would be little delay then I see no reason why HG cant do this. In fact the way I see it that HAVE to do it, full stop. Brett, can you confirm how easy or otherwise this would be to do? Like I said, even once Sipra problems are sorted most of us who actually remain with HG will surely be demanding a switch to a different server anyway. So why not DO IT NOW???

I'll be staying on Supra... because at least that way I'll know that the problem has been fixed on this one! Other servers might just cause more problem! Plus I'd have to go in and change all the IP settings in my scripts, and customer scripts. My customers don't want to start from scratch... they just want their data! Moving to another server does no good when you don't have any data to put on it!
And it's time for an update!? It's been an hour...

HG's silence is deafening here. Where are you Brent? Surely the DC are working on the issue, not you.
Can we have an update? Canj you answer the xfer questions above? |

Re clients just want their data. In my experience clients weight importance of services as email access 90% and websites up and running 10%. Most clients go nuts when their email is down, especially if they are in business and relying on it. However, websites being down for a short period they understand. As far as I'm concerned get the bloody emails system up and running first and formost, sort out the rest of the sh*t later |

Yes I agree... they want their email! However... we'd have to re-create their email accounts in their CPanels... and by the time that is done the server would be back, because we don't know what addresses they had setup!

It's going on for TWO HOURS now since the last report.
I'm a patiant guy, but come on... this is hardly reasonable. What's the situation? Is there an ETA? Can those of us who want one have a transfer? EDIT: At 2 Hours: I'm fast reaching the point of new server or new host. This just can't go on. Is anybody actually there now? Last edited by Matrix0; 01-06-2005 at 05:03 PM. |

The only good thing that I can see come of this is:
1. our accounts are restored to the way they were right before this second crash (aka working properly) 2. the moron tech in The Planet who screwed up getting his butt kicked across Texas for being incompetant (I'll personally fly to Texas to accomplish this if no one else has the time) and 3. this kind of thing never happening again. How about it?

They found the original drive and said all user files look good!!!! Everyone Is getting their data back from the 30 days lost when it failed!~~~ something could go wrong but he really knew what he is talking about and was quite confident there won't be problems.
All system files are gone which is fine, since he is going to put new system files on and they can be replaced. Don't get too excited just yet he said all of all of /sda1 is gone, dev problem and user passwords look to be gone. But hey we had this problem before! Nothing major... He said it will take roughly an hour and a half. He believes it was a RAM or cpu problem. In any case, we are having the entire machine swapped except for the hard drive. I will keep everyone posted. I hope we are not all let down again coming back from dead.

So the data is still 30 days old?

So, does this mean anything we've put up since the first restoration will be toast? If so, I must be able to get my current MySQL files.

It sounds like everything up to the first crash is still somehow intact. Ah well, another day of rebuilding isn't how I planned on spending tomorrow but if that's what it means then that's what it means. Ironically, I was just on my way to back up the mysql database on the last site when this second crash happened. Fate's got weird ways of toying with us feeble humans, doesn't it?
