I am just getting a little irritated because you always shutting down my websites when i sleep. Your Admin staff probably goes online when i go offline and when i wake up i always see the website down for 8 hours or more.
1. Stop suggest i will move to a dedicated server it is to much for me right now the website not making enough money and the problem is not that great. 2. Stop shutting down the website when MSN boot is crawling it, help me stop or reject MSN boot instead. It is not my Script or website that is causing the problem it is the MSN boot. Since they crawl the website every two days what can i do? 3. If one script is causing the problem shout down THAT directory not the entire website. 4. Put down for maintenance or something not 403 error. 5. You have my IP it is always the same and why block the FTP i have to wait for you to wake up and answer my ticket loosing another hour or so when my website is down. Actually there is no need to block anything just THAT ip that is causing the problem. thank you for an otherwise good hosting |

What reason has HG given you for shutting down your site?

To many connections on the database If you check the IP it was MSN bot why not just block MSN at that moment. I can not sit here for 24 hours a day. They do not work 24 hours the admin log in USA time and as soon as they do they find some issue and shut it down and when i awake the domain already been down for 10 hours.

Why don't you use robots.txt to block the MSN agent?

If you are on a shared server, and your site doesn't comply with the ToS, HG will shut down your site. You may be affecting other users on the server you are on and HG cannot allow this to happen. There are ways to block IP addresses and bots from accessing your site, but the action to block them has to be initiated by you. You can ask HG via a ticket to block a single or range of IP's, and they will likely assist you.

Well you should not block BING right? So yes i know but they should themself block BING just for temp instead of shutting my site down. I have done all the robot.txt and everything i can.

Let's try this a different way, if your site was running slowly andHG told you it was because another user was using too many resources what would you want? I suspect you would want HG to shut down the other site so that yours would work well. Shared hosting has its limits.

Fair enough. But then it's time to move away from a shared server, to a dedicated.

Since the "database" overload is maybe a 10 min problem you might think Hostgator would just shut out that IP instead of shutting down my site for 10 hours. Everybody tells me dedicated server will solve all my problems but my sites are to big and make to little money to have on a dedicated server...

You don't seem to realize that many other sites are on the same server as you. The people paying for hosting on that server deserve to have quality service, not a server that is having it's resources used up by a single user. HG charges you a very small amount of money per month to host your site. There is no way the support team can continually be monitoring your site, shutting down for a few minutes every now and then when it breaks the ToS. That makes no sense at all. Quote:
1. Too big to have on a dedicated server. Really... yet you are ok with having it on a shared server. This makes no sense. 2. Make too little money to have on a dedicated server. This is not HG's problem. You need to comply with the ToS for the server you are on, or HG will shut your site down... If your site has outgrown a shared hosting account, you will need to move to a dedicated server and pay the associated costs. The alternative is to close down your site.

If the excessive load on your site is the result of an MSN bot doing its thing, then you haven't done the robots.txt correctly.

Hi Striddy take a chill pill ok! You do not get issue here. I have nothing against HG shutting down website for problems regarding a high load on a permanent bases. But instead of shutting me down at night letting me wait 10 hours to get it up they should maybe shut the directory making the problem down or just delete that MSN bot. I am sure when you buy a dedicated server you get the same issue and some guy will tell you should buy your own server at home. My issue is 1 min or 2 not for hours at the time.
Earlyout, i made that robot.txt with the help of hostgator. It is correct but i am not also adjusting the speed in BING webmaster center and the issue did not accrue again. I have no also blocked all the bad bots from crawling my site plug put a delay on all "good" once. |

HG will only play this game with you for so long. Once you have been shut down a couple of times, they will not re-instate your account unless you can prove that changes have been made to your site(s). Seems like you have already been shut down a few times, so best to prepare to revise your site, move to a dedicated server, or shut down your site. Good luck with you site(s) and hope things get resolved.

I always make the changes to my sites they advice me to. I know they do not like site being shut down to many times thats why i think it is stupid to shut down for a MSN bot problem.

To repeat, if this really is just an MSN bot problem, you'll have to block it. There have been reports that the MSN bot doesn't properly honor robots.txt, but a simple IP block should take care of it. There are published lists of the IP ranges for the major search bots. Google for msn bot ip addresses.
And again, your site is being shut down because you're on a shared server. There is no reason for anyone else on the server to suffer because you haven't got your site set up properly. You can't expect individual attention or special treatment for one domain out of 7,000,000. This is your responsibility, not anyone else's. If you can't take care of it properly on a shared server, moving to a dedicated server is the only solution. Continuing to complain about it in a peer-to-peer forum isn't going to solve the problem. Convincing anyone here that things should be different from the way they are, won't change reality. Which part of this are you not understanding? |

Last time i checked it was a Suggestion forum so that is my Suggestion. I am not really care what you idea of HG is i have mine. But i am giving my Suggestion to them. Unless you work at HG you should care less about my Suggestions right? If you want to give advice you are welcome and i already blocked the MSN bot.
This is what VB had to say about this Sounds like you need a new host- your message inparticular was likely the result of low disk space on the mysql server/drive. A good host would never tell you that. Once again my suggestion is to HG to stop shutting down the website and block the problem until we can solve them together. This is what my thread is about not making a VIP line for me. This thread is finished for me now i given my suggestions. |

Someone who has an account in HG shared server might want to start a thread "Please keep shutting down websites".

Make up your mind. You keep saying that the problem is caused by the MSN bot, but then keep saying that you've blocked the MSN bot. Both of those statements can't be true.
Typical response from vB - they're just punting. You'll notice that other vB users on HG aren't in here in droves, reporting problems with disk space for mySQL. But vB is a known resource hog, so it may be more likely to run into CPU usage problems with vB than other board software. But I agree with quietFinn - we should start a thread that suggests that HG keep blocking users whose sites make sharing a server with them a constant misery. They shouldn't just block them for a few minutes at a time. They should shut them down completely until those users fix the problems with their sites. |

In a previous ticket or on-line chat have you asked HG to stop shutting down the site and work with you to solve this problem?

I've ran plenty of vB forums on "shared" servers with no problems. Yes, vB requires a lot of the server resources to run, but as you stated, this is MSN bot not a vB issue.
Yes, this is the Suggestions section of the forum, but this is also a Peer-to-Peer forum. This forum section was created so that a member can provide suggestions on how to improve HG, which you have done. However, this forum was created so that other members could reply and provide feedback as well. I think we all benefit from that setting. |

Personally, I am really happy to see that HG is shutting down sites that hog all the resources!
Earlier last year, my small site was constantly unavailable due to max connections, slowed to a crawl a LOT due to high CPU load. MONTHS of this... my site suffered terribly. I blocked all the bots, banned IPs of things like Baidu Spider... did everything I possibly could on my tiny little site, to no avail. After several back and forths with HG, they moved me to another server and I have had no problems since. Fingers crossed that no-one on my current server will start hogging all the resources..... To the OP, get a dedicated server Also, I highly doubt that the MSN Bot was the cause of the "issue".

People also need to understand that hostgator is the service provider. They do not have to hold your hand through website management. I love how everyone has told him exactly what to do, yet he doesn't do it.
