Default Static IP and SMTP

If I get a plan with a static IP address, would that address be used as my domain's MX, or is it static only for the purpose of web hosting?

My current host offers "static IP" addresses with each of their plans. However, I found out after the fact that it's only used for http and my MX points to the server's IP address. The big downside to this is that if I end up sharing a server with a spammer, I could get blocked by IP-based blacklists.

Followup question for extra credit: Do the SMTP servers reject non-existant email addresses with a 550 reply? Or is the incoming message accepted and a "bounce" sent after-the-fact?

Mail is still sent from the server's IP address. The dedicated IP is needed for an SSL.

As long as you have the default address set to :fail: in cpanel.
