I've never had a need for SSL before, but I now have a client who wants an online store. I'll be using OsCommerce. (I've already set up a demo store for him without issues other than my other post http://forums.hostgator.com/showthread.php?t=6761)
If I can keep this client I will be setting up the Copper reseller plan with HG. What do I need to do for the shared SSL Is this for me as a host, or does this SSL work for all my clients. Is this sufficient for a webstore? He sells auto parts, some transactions will be nearly $5000 a piece. Or would something like this require a Private SSL (http://www.hostgator.com/popup/privatessl.html) ... Also is the $75 fee an annual fee or one time purchase |

The shared ssl certificate is just as secure as a private SSL certificate, however it is not appropriate for an online store. This is because it will generate a pop-up warning whenever people try to check out.
You're best off getting a RapidSSL certificate from a 3rd party and then paying HG $10 to install it-- that's the cheapest way because it will be a one time $10 install fee from HG and about $14/year for the certificate. If you don't want to deal with a 3rd party, you can get the Hostgator one that will cost $75 a year and include installation. Don't forget that you also need to pay $2/month for the additional IP, which is in addition to the SSL fee. |

I have a question: does the $2/m for the IP apply per domain, or per customer/reseller?

Thus it is $2/m per cert (or $2/m per domain as you phrased your question). JEDs |

First, between the thread start and Sophia's post, HG started including a private cert, installed, with the Business plan. This makes it, at $15 total per month, less expensive than buying the cert, paying the monthly IP fee, and paying HG to install it. Second, "per domain" is a misleading concept--on shared accounts, only one domain can have a private cert (only one IP per cPanel account).

Thanks for the clarification, but now it leaves me with more questions actually (apologies btw for reviving such an old thread, a Google search brought me there and I did not check the date
).I have a reseller account, what would be the best option there? If I ever consider reselling SSL to clients, is that possible at all? |

Although I think you'd have to have HG install the certs for you, you can resell them to customers. The cheapest source, as Matt said, is the Rapidshare one, though namecheap.com usually has a great special on them--free with any domain purchase (and they don't need to be used with the domain that you buy, they can be used on any domain. If namecheap still sells .infos for 2.99, that would be a deal that's hard to top.)

Thanks again
I bought one from NameCheap, in fact I still had credit with them. $19 for 2 years is not bad... and HG only charges $10 once.

Hi,
Is it possible to install a SSL certificate yourself or is it something that only HG has to do? Thanks |

You will have to ask tech support to install the certificate. There is a $10 charge for installation and a $2 a month charge for the dedicated IP that is needed as well.

Where did you get that information from?
HG has charged $10 to install SSL certs and $2 per IP for a very long time. That's in addition to the cost of the SSL cert, wherever you decide to purchase that from.
