Default ssh/cron

is this possible with the baby account

cron would be quite useful for me to automate db backups and some other simple tasks, and ssh is very useful for quick directory moving.

regards
Ash

You do get CRON access but you do not get SSH with a Baby account.

On some accounts Cron is not active, so if cron isn't working, it will need to be enabled via support.

It seems that SSH is now on all packages ?
Its mentioned No Daemons or Background processes allowed.
Does this mean that you cant run a script like this :
nohup php scirpt.php
?
Even if theres a usleep(100); in the loop ?

Well, that is not technically a background script and its not a Deamon, so per the TOS that is ok. However, if you disconnect and that script is still running, then it IS a background script because you don't have an active ssh, so you would be in violation at that point.

Either way, if you run into something were you are splitting hairs if it is legal or not, you are risking the process being stopped or your account suspended.

There would be no need to run a php script that way unless your intent was for it to run for a long time, even when it is sleeping. Doing so is a one way ticket to suspension.

Serra - I did mention usleep(100)(or make it 500 for that matter) which is why I wanted to know if its still allowed - even after disconnecting SSH - thats what nohup is abt - it'll run even when the active ssh connection closes.

Let say I got to retrieve 100 RSS feeds from other websites - i got to run it in the background but not continuously - hence usleep.

I submitted to abuse some perhaps TOS borderline scripts and always the answer was "So long you dont hurt the server, use it" even the answer was back very fast meaning nobody had the time to overlook the script.
Also once, about a more heavy one, support told me put a sleep(1) in each loop and should be ok.

If you use nohup and you disconnect, then you have effectively created a background process, which is in violation of the TOS. YMMV!

You are not allows to run shell scripts. That what they mean by "no background processes".

No, it IS RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY if you are using usleep. It isn't using processor power, but the script IS running and IS racking up CPU usage on the process display, unlike a process which ends. Again, you can play stupid games all you want, but if you screw around with the TOS, you are going to be suspended and you will be fighting with abuse for three days to get your site back online.

There are a 1000 ways to get around the TOS restrictions, but support isn't supid. When they see you being a ****tard, they will suspend your ass.

Thanks for your detailed explanation sera. obviously i dont want to srew with their tos - but i really had to know their limits because i got a requirement to parse various rss feeds - not exactly a reader - but something on those lines.

Talking Re: ssh/cron

Looks like you can request SSH shell/terminal access using the following page:

http://gator###.hostgator.com:2082/f...addons/ssh.php

Where "gator###" is your server name, e.g. "gator123".
