I advertise my site in newspapers, give out business cards, and pay per click on google.

The advice here is still the very best out there and it is free, giving you the option to donate if you find the information helpful and I am sure that you will. A donation allows you access to a few nice tools that will help you organize and track the promotion of your web site.

Default SEO software

I'd appreciate some opinions on SEO software. Is it a use useful tool or the quickest way to be penalized by Google?

Personally I think spending money of SEO software is a waste. With plenty of links leading to your site, and content that google likes it will be spidered soon enough and without costing a penny.

One of my sites, has a page rank of 7 on the google toolbar. I started the site five months ago. Lots of links, web directories etc and it cost me nothing in SEO.

Spending money on search engine submital software is a waste. primarily because most don't allow automatic submissions anymore. I've used Submit Wolf and another package in the past, while they might submit your site to 1000's of sites, they don't target your audience and the big SE, don't care about those sites.

Time & Patience is the only way to get a good SE ranking. submit to directories, and have lots of incoming links to your site from similar sites. I think Source ordering, Keyword ratios, friendly url's and page titles have alot to do with it as well. Not to mention alot has to do with the Keywords you are targetting.

There is no exact science, that's why I don't think that software works, and it will take at least 3-6 months to get a regular visit from google.

This is so subjective to the type of site you are marketing and what you believe your target audience is.

Rather than using SEO software as a submission tool, I'm thinking about using it to run keyword and ranking reports. The advancement of the sites will be performed by me, not by software, but I would be able to use the data the software collects. Is collecting this data going to penalize me with Google or any of the other search engines?

If your talking about web hosting, then, yes way too much competition. I think your better of targeting clients locally, small to med. sized businesses, with a viral marketing campaign rather than relying solely on online marketing, especially in a heavily saturated market, like web hosting.

1. Self promotion is about making sure that your web site is search ready firstly. There must be no "we are updating" pages anywhere including protected pages.
2. Make sure that you l@@k at your page and read it. Add Keywords from these ONLY. If you need to rewrite you page, then do so.
3. Page titles are crucial. Always use a keyword index that will fall in line with the above [2].
4. Distinguish between man administered search, and robot search engines.
5. Use a reciprocal link exchange program and make sure the links are not doorway pages.
6. Find and post to: All free sites for listings. There are some around.

This has worked for me time and time again and is free provided that you are willing to take time out to administer it. Pay by click seems a scam to me. Create a good page, good content and design, follow but not too strictly the above and you will do fine.
