Just today, I received 18 separate spam messages on one account since 9 am (it is only 5 pm). I never had this problem on Yahoo. I am posting this on a separate thread from the Spam poll because the problem has become significantly worse since I first responded there, and Host Gator does not seem to be doing anything to address it.

Most people prefer that their host NOT address this problem so they can address it themselves. What type of spam scanner are you running?

I think personally even I won't like my host to control the spam thing ... don't want to loss any important message, by chance ...

I have a client with a very agressive spam scanner on their mail and I often get my email eaten by the scanner. It makes it diffcult to do business.

In case you couldn't tell I'm being sarcastic. My main email address regularly averages about 30 spam emails a day. Even at that, it's only just over 1 an hour. How hard is it to hit the delete button? Really. I'd be happy with 18.

It was not even a full day - it was a span of 8 hours. In 24 hours, I am receiving way more than 30.

Sadly it is still a low number, and SPAM isn't somting you want your hosting company to be blocking. They provide you with things such as Spam Assasin to help block them with rules customized to you needs.

18 times 3 equals 54. That is the number in a 24 hour period. 54 spam emails a day is a low number?

If you really need a good anti-spam program, but don't want to spend any money, Comodo is offering one for free. You can find it linked on my hosting site. Last edited by Serra; 10-09-2006 at 08:06 PM. |

Thank you for the insult. I am not cheap. I was under the impression that spam filtering was something that the host was supposed to do, since I never had a spam problem at all with Yahoo. Yahoo's filter must be much, much better than Spam Assasin.

And I would love to see a response from Host Gator rather than this snide and obnoxious person who chooses to respond - I am not really interested in your thoughts.

Actually, I didn't mean you WERE TOO cheap to buy one, I've reworded that a bit to more fix what I meant to say. Yes, Yahoo's spam filter is very agressive, but Yahoo is free, so you can continue to use your Yahoo address. goDaddy also has an agressive email scanner and you can puchase, fairly cheaply, a set of email accounts there. Did you try the spam scanner from Comodo? It isn't a web host's job to spam scan... Yahoo is a email service, that is a little different. (even if you are hosting there too). Not blocking some spam makes it easier for you to insure that nothing important is being blocked. Let your local spam scanner take care of the rest. Last edited by Serra; 10-09-2006 at 08:19 PM. |

I get about 50 spam a day on my 13 email accounts, all but two or three end up in my junk mail bin, where they are deleted.

Have youn considered sending your mail to yahoo to let them filter it for you? I'm looking at my server's stats.... Its received 11,345 spam since this monrining, and removed 436 viruses from e-mails. About 90% of that spam is not delivered for various reasons. Oh ya, i only have 52 acounts on this server. I respect serra, you proably should too, and his comment is still your best bet if SA isn't cutting it for you. |

If too much spam is getting past SA, addtional rules really help. I have some tailored rules for spam I'm getting. With 15 additional rules, I'm down to almost zero spam. |

Must be a XP thing -- with OS/X I only have one, if the spam assassin re-write has [SPAM] in it -- its tossed. On the flip side, I just set OS/X mail to bounce all the other junk.

Could you draw me a road-map of how to view this type of stats in HG's cpanel? Or is it in the WHM?

WHM, MailScanner. Resellers and regular cPanel users cannot view these stats.

I've got a spam assassin question: at the top where it says 'required score' - the default is 5, but if i want it to be more aggressive about marking spam, should the score be lower or higher? The text there is a little ambigious and the spam assassin site seemed a lot more geard towards developers than users in terms of explaining the basics.
I've always had the occasional spam, it doesn't generally bother me, but lately (last month or so) it's been getting pretty silly. dozens of messages a day that i guess look enough like real email that the old filters/rules/etc I've had in place just aren't effective, and i'm not quite sure how to filter out the junk. |

I have my spam assassin minimum score (cpanel mail section) set at 2.5 which helps somewhat, but there is a lot of crap, specifically the ones with images or the stock ones get through, but most get caught. I get a lot of spam, most gets caught
