Default Some quick questions about domains

Before i sign up for host gator, i'd like to ask a few questions

I already have a domain name, (from http://www.anhosting.com) is there a way i could transfer it to gator? If theres a guide on how to do that, i would greatly appreciate it. I also read somewhere that i could easily transfer all my files from my old hosting to here, could that be true?

If thats not possible, is setting up a new domain name free here? If not, how much is it to create a new one?

Also, do you charge monthly, or yearly?

Thank you so much in advance

As long as you have access to the domain management with your registrar all that is necessary is to change the nameservers to the ones HG gives you when the account is set up.

Domain registration is not included in the hosting prices.

You can choose the payment period. If you pay for three years there is a discounted price.

I looked around a bit, and have one more question. If i transfer my old domain name to gator, will i be charged the yearly domain fee? Or is that just for domain names created under gator.

If you transfer the domain registration there is still a yearly registration fee. You can also opt to leave the registration with your current registrar and just change the nameservers.

Which is what many of us would recommend... not always good to have your host and domain registrar to be the same person...

All this is rather confusing to me, i opened a ticket with my old hosting and waiting for a reply. (and with them, i'll be lucky to get a reply in a week) I'm not to sure how to edit the nameservers, and if i'm even able to.

If after i cancel my hosting with them, will i still get to keep the domain name? There website states "domain for life" but i'm not sure..

Also, does gator support:
* PHP 4.2 or greater
* MySQL 4.0 or greater
* The mod_rewrite Apache module

PhP 5 (With Script)
MySQL 5 (On request)

Sign into your Control Panel for your domain search for 'Settings' or 'DNS' or 'NameServer' something on the lines of that HG will send you a email with your NameServers you will need to use Eg."NsXX.Hostgator.com",
Simply change it to that then register with that domain OR when you have registered with HG simply select 'Addon Domain' in Cp wait for your DNS to clear and it will work perfectly.

If you provide your domain name we may be able to help determine whether you might be able to change the info or transfer it. It often depends on how they registered it and whether it is in your name or theirs. One problem with having the domain included in the hosting account is some hosts register it in their name and make it hard (or impossible) for you to change hosts. You will have to find out from them whether you can use the domain if you cancel with them.

it depends. is the domain registered in your name or theirs? domain registration and hosting are two entirely different animals. many people get them confused because it's all "my website."

if they say you get "domain for life," it could mean that they give you the domain as long as you're a hosting customer for them but it stays in their name, which isn't a good idea. most domains cost under $10/year, so it's almost always a better idea to set up and control your own if possible than leaving it to your hosting company, as some hosting companies become very uncooperative when they know you're bailing (but not hg to my knowledge).

to edit nameservers, you need to be listed on the domain as one of the contacts at a minimum.

google "whois" and look up your domain in a whois tool. that will tell you who's name is on the domain-you want your name someplace on there, what company it's registrered with, when it expires and what the current nameservers ae set to.

if you have trouble, list your domain here and someone will probably help you look it up...

I did the whois search, and it didn't have my name anywhere on there. They did reply to my ticket with this:

Hello Amanda,

The information for Limited ENOM access is below.

Link: http://access.enom.com/
Domain:Mandy-Chan.com
Password: *******

This type of access gives you the ability to manage your domain, update your email address, update your DNS server settings, and update your Whois information. This does not cancel your hosting account. Please contact billing if you need to cancel your hosting account or need to transfer your domain name to another registrar.

Please ask your new hosting company to help you to transfer out your files.

Thank you

That doesn't really tell me if i'll be able to keep the domain name though...or am i just a newbie in all this?

It does tell you that you can change the nameservers and that is the key to using a different hosting company. When an account is set up here you will receive an email with the nameserver info. You would then edit the domain management at the link you listed to provide that information so that the domain will point to the account here. If you can change the Registrant Contact and Administrative Contact then you would also be able to transfer the domain registration if you wish.

yes, it does tell you that you can keep the domain since you can access it to change things on the domain record....fyi, you do NOT have to change the domain registsration company to use a new hosting company. it's fine at enom. the nameservers is what "tells the internet" where to look for your site. so to change your host, you change nameservers on your domain record.
