Default Some questions

Hello,

I have been with Powweb for years and I have had just about enough of their shoddy service, so I am looking for a new host and you were recommended to me.

My website, http://www.domeofstars.com/forum, (it'll probably load slowly/not at all at the moment...) is primarily an SMF forum (I have a few HTML pages as well but they're not the focus of the site). Because my forum is focused on a TV show, when new episodes air, I can get up to 700 people on the site at once - usually, however, traffic is nowhere near as high as this, with perhaps 20 or 30 people on at a time.

I have some questions I would like to ask.

1) Is there a limit to the number of connections to a database at any one time? Powweb recently introduced this and I really want to be able to manage those high numbers when they do come.

2) What package would you recommend for me? Disk space isn't a concern but in terms of bandwidth? I will of course have a closer look but Powweb OPS only provides me with my current month's bandwidth usage, which, since it's the 3rd of the month, is pretty useless...

3) I read that you can transfer a MySQL database for me? That would be great as I don't really know what I am doing in regards to transferring hosts (this will be my first time) - can you tell me what this would involve?

If I can think of more I will post them here.

Thank you so much for any help, it would be much appreciated The new series of the TV show is starting this week so as you can imagine I am a bit panicked/frustrated!!

There is a limit (most shared hosts will have similar limits) of 25 concurrent connections. Since connections generally only last a few milliseconds you can have hundreds of users online at once.

The only differences in the shared plans is in the disk space and bandwidth. I would guess if you had any problems it would be using too many cpu cycles rather than running out of bandwidth. HG will generally work with you but if the site grows to the point of needing a dedicated server you are not likely to find any host that will let it run on shared servers.

If the old host uses cPanel then they can move the whole site. If not I would get a database dump and upload it to your space here and ask support to restore it. You can also submit a support request and they can tell you more what they can do.

Thank you for your help Powweb doesn't use cPanel but I'll read up on database dumps. Thanks also for the info on connections - didn't know that, and it's quite reassuring!

If you have PhpMyAdmin in your control panel you can do a dump from there. You may also be able to do a database backup from your admin on the forum software.
