Ok, I have been reading all thru the forums to get a take no things before I sign up for an account. And my readings have left me with a few questions. I hope that you all can help answer them for me so that I can lay my fears to rest and move forward witht he process, as I think I would like to become a new customer.
Here they are in no particular order of importance: 1. Was reading in the forums about some sort of email limits. There were several posts back and forth but each posting read as if it were contradicting the post before. I just need to get a better handle on said limits. If I have a reseller account, one of my clients has say 50-100 employees. How many emails can they send/receive per hour? What happens if they exceed that amount? If they host their own email (have their own inhouse exchange server) is this limit still in place? 2. Another item related to email was the 5 minute delay between checking for emails. Using the same examples as above, If I have two clients, each with 50-100 users. Co. A uses your webmail, Co. B has an inhouse exchange server. Are you saying that in either of those cases, the people or the exchange server could not connect to check for new incoming emails but once every 5 minutes? Yes, under normal circumstances people wont be checking email every thirty seconds, but there are cases where I have some users that I know treat their email almost like an instant messager. They would have a serious problem waiting for 5 full minutes to get a response sometimes. 3. Granted few people post on support forums when things are going good, but I noticed that over the past 3 months (not 3 days, not 3 weeks, but 3 months) there have been several long lasting outtages. With a lot of people posting about the outtages, but not alot of responses. Could you better elaborate what problems you have been having lately, what measures you are taking from letting those kinds of issues affect you in the future (referring to lots of outtages related to spammers). 4. Similar to #3, there has been a lot of complaints about slowness... 5. Related to scripting, I assume that if I already have a version of PHP-Nuke or phpbb or the like, I can run my own verses your one-touch auto-install jobber. 6. Do you guys play at all with Windows Sharepoint Services? 7. Most hosts say that I can use PHP OR ASP, but not both. I noticed that both are checked off in all the accounts. Are you saying I can use either or both? I know kinda long winded, but I figured I would get all the questions in one post verses lots of small posts. Thanks for your time. Jason |

1. There is a limit on each account of only checking email 30 times an hour. There is an outgoing limit of 200 emails per hour on each email account. If you have your own email server of course we place no limits on that.
2. Webmail is not POP so you can check it as often as you want. POP connections are limited to 30 an hour. 3. We haven't had many outages the last couple months, can you tell me which you are reffering too? We had one problem with the data center not shutting down a server which caused it to drag for around 8 hours but that has been discussed with the data center and will not happen again. 4. There are no problems with speed, we are located at one of the best data centers in the country and that is not an issue. 5. Yep 6. Nope 7. For ASP you can fill out a request and be moved to a Chilisoft ASP box. Chilisoft ASP is run from linux so you can also do PHP on it but it will not work with ASP.NET or Microsoft databases. |

Eclipse (Oct 28 11:20 AM EST-Oct 28 10:29 PM EST), Corvette (Oct 28 2:51pm PST - Oct 28 3:12 pst), Porsche (undefined just said two days of problems) Hummer (Oct 14 - Oct 15th) Jeep (Sep 17 - Sep 21) Chrysler (Sep 13- Sep 14) Civic (Jun 28th) and Supra (Aug 16th) have all been down, or atleast lots of clients could not get to sites or not get email (which is the same thing as being down to me - as someone else said, email is far more important than a functioning website). Ok, thought of a couple more questions. 1. Do you guys protect at all against hackers, website defacements, etc...? 2. On the weekly back ups, does that cover the entire server, or just a portion? |

The below dates are just when issues were posted, not when there was actual downtime, and many times just one service is stopped while we fix it.
1. Of course, the servers are fully secured. 2. The weekly backups are of all user's files and all their data. |

[QUOTE=GatorBen]1. There is a limit on each account of only checking email 30 times an hour. There is an outgoing limit of 200 emails per hour on each email account.
Please clarify this - it is NOT clear anywhere here. 200 emails per hour per: 1) Reseller account 2) Domain name (possibly many under a reseller account 3) User name (again possibly many under each domain name) Every answer given has been a bit contradictory. Thanks Wolf |

I emailed support a while back about the email issue because an email limit is why I left my previous host, and I didn't see anything about limits in the HG sales stuff. I was told it is 200 per hour per email address. So me@mydomain would have 200 and someoneelse@mydomain would have another 200.
I also seem to remember (I can't find the email right now) that it only applies to shared and reseller hosting. Dedicated servers don't have that limit (but, please, someone verify this for us). That said, the 30 POP checks per hour is a new one to me. How 'bout we get someone who can list every restriction on email so we stop getting surprised? - Ryan |

Yeah that would be really nice...
I'm glad I decided on a reseller account to test how the support here was before going with dedicated servers....the contradictory statements on restrictions is just the tip of the iceburg it seems. Peace Wolf |

Quite honestly I am not looking for suggestions on where to lease dedicated servers. Especially not in this thread. Nor is being cheaper the best way to decide who to do any kind of web hosting with. HG has a good reputation, is housed in an extraordinary data center and is very reasonably priced for dedicated servers.
If you have something to add to this thread regarding e-mail policies, I am all ears. Peace Wolf |
