If you are receiving emails from "Mail Delivery System" with the subject "Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender" with:

Quote:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

user@domain.com
unrouteable mail domain "domain.com"
in the message body (wher "user" and "domain" can be anything), then:
  1. Log in to the administrator account at your phpBB forums
  2. Go to the "Administration Panel"
  3. Under "General Admin", click "Configuration"
  4. Under "Email Settings", set "Use SMTP Server for email" to "Yes"
  5. Set all other relevant email settings while you're there.

Problem solved.

Make sure your path to sendmail is correct.

"/usr/sbin/sendmail" is what it should be. This forum doesn't use SMTP, yet we recieve no mail issues.

If you have that as your path to sendmail, and you were recieving that message when you sent an e-mail then there might be a problem.

The forum was using sendmail for two weeks. I had to switch to SMTP because the nobody user was turned off on the server I'm sharing, due to spammers.

Actually the message ' unrouteable mail domain' is the error message returned when you are exceeding the hourly email limit.

This message will be returned regardless of whether you are logging into the server when sending email. The only way to avoid the message is to send less than 200 emails per hour.

Please see the email policy at http://www.hostgator.com/mailpolicy.shtml

not sure if practical, but wouldn't this message be better if customized to say that? just a thought

A dedicated solution... or using a mailing list to throttle them, but then you can't use phpBB

Dedicated Server(Can be Expensive) or throttle(Best solution) or Buy 3rd party Mailing List services(Can be also expensive) from a company to just send your email blast.

Use google groups or Campaign monitor-- google groups is free, campaign monitor is cheap but unbranded. Both are great.

Yeah lol, money is a major issue. I just guess I won't email my users.

If I did a mailing list I'd have to manually add each new user...not something I want to do.

and...I don't understand this whole "throttle" thing...
