Default socialengine

Hi

We are thinking of creating a site using socialengine. We are currently on a baby plan. Does this type of site need it's own dedicated server? Is there a way of not doing this? Would we have to create a new account? The technical requirements are as follows:

Basic Requirements (SocialEngine Core)

http://www.socialengine.net/view/images/php_logo.jpg PHP
Minimum

  • PHP 5.12 or newer
  • PHP extensions: gd2, curl, iconv
  • Safe mode must be OFF
  • Register Globals must be OFF
  • Memory limit: 32M+
  • Sendmail
  • Zend Optimizer must NOT be installed
Recommended

  • PHP 5.26 or newer
  • PHP extensions: dom
Optional Extensions

  • apc (speed boost)
  • bcmath (speed boost)
  • json (speed boost)
  • mbstring (required for non-English support)

http://www.socialengine.net/view/images/mysql_logo.jpg MySQL Database
Minimum

  • MySQL 4.1 or newer
  • 1 available database
  • InnoDB table support
Recommended

  • MySQL 5.0 or newer

http://www.socialengine.net/view/images/apache_logo.jpg Web Server
Minimum

  • Apache-based shared web hosting
Recommended

  • Apache-based VPS or dedicated web server
  • crontab
  • mod_rewrite (for SEO-friendly URLs)
  • memcached (speed boost)

Plugin Requirements

Some SocialEngine plugins have optional requirements:
Chat Plugin

  • VPS or dedicated server - budget/shared servers may not handle a high volume of users chatting at the same time.
Video Plugin

  • ffmpeg (for encoding video) - without ffmpeg, users can still post YouTube and Vimeo videos.
  • allow_url_fopen enabled

Is there anyone else out there who is using socialengine? It would be great to have some advice.

Many thanks

Also, remember you wont be able to use the video FFMPEG feature on shared accounts. You would need a VPS or dedicated server for that.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. Have looked at joomla and community builder and jomsocial but can't find a template I like, plus it will be more fiddly to install and customise.

I'm testing out socialengine in a folder in the public_html folder. It's just the trial version but wanted to know if it was as slow on hostgator as it is on my localhost. Have ftp'd the files and going to the install page. There's one requirement that's showing up as needed: PHP Register Globals is currently ON - please turn it off and try again.

Is this possible? Or will it jepodise our other sites. How do I do this?

Thanks

If you search 'Register Globals' at the Support link above there are several pages in the Support Portal on changing PHP settings. See this page on Register Globals for example. It explains how to add a php.ini file to your site where you can change some settings.I believe it is possible to change using the PHP configuration link in your cPanel.
