Default Slow CGI response during day

Some good new and bad news...

Bad news:
Mountain Daylight time
11:33 AM Server Load 4.24 (4 cpus)
11:47 AM Server Load 3.18 (4 cpus
Other times: 2 cpus in use, sometimes 1 cpu in use

Okay..it's not like I'm running a high traffic site here, and I'm already noticing extremely slow response time via cgi.

My CGI programs run rast at 3AM in the morning. Any other time, it takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds just for the CGI program of any sort to begin loading! And yet here in my building my CGI programs run fine on a 486 100mhz AMD computer!

It makes me wonder if some people on these shared hosts never really check their websites that often.. and they just think everything is okay because they are running a personal home page that they update maybe once a year? Well, me, I check my websites several times in the day! I update my sites at least twice a day! So I notice when the site is slow. I don't just update my sites once a year.. maybe some people do.

I just came from servage.net and had the same problems - at 3AM-4AM in the morning, the website runs fast at times.

But i'm only running a website that gets 30 visitors a day, for creeps sake!
Good News:

HostGator FTP speeds seem to be fine. When I connect to FTP I get great response time. By response time, I mean when changing directories, connecting, etc. On servage.net, sometimes it would take 5-20 seconds just to change directories or connect to the FTP. On hostgator, FTP response times are instant.
Questions:

Any ideas? Am I experiencing just the normal shared hosting whoes that will never go away no matter what service I'm on? My CGI programs are compiled, and run fast on my 486 test computers.

CGI response time is fine now. I will continue to monitor it, and see whether it is spiked maybe only at certain times.

Have noticed similar load averages rise (as is to be expected on shared account) during various times per day. My load averages typically are 0.xx - 1.xx and they'll occasionally spike to 3.xx. Only once I've seen it higher than 4.xx.

I also run a low volume forum, 70+ members, average 30+ members at peak times. Though luckily I seldom see any slowdowns as you've described, the operative word is seldom. I have seen the dreaded 4 second page load and 20+ second dir change in ftp on the rare occasion and I too tend the cyber garden frequently.

All and all, my experiences have been more than acceptable. Here's to your problems being reduced if not alleviated.

Cheers m8

I think like you say, it was just a temporary spike.. overall I so far have found the hosting to be much more responsive than my other host.. I better try it for a good few days/weeks and gain a more general average.
