Six months and all's well
I have now been hosting with HostGator for six months and so far I am very happy. In those six months my site monitor has logged only one outage, that for about two hours in the middle of the night. That's 99.99924% uptime over six months. So performance-wise, I could not have asked for better.
Support-wise, I have not needed very much. The WHM and CPanel interfaces work very well. When I did need support, the experience was not perfect, but was certainly quite decent in light of how little we all pay. And in frequently reading both the positive and negative threads in these forums, I'm convinced that I am hosting with an outfit which at least does care about the level of service perceived by its clients.
I think it's good to read that management boots accounts that abuse their privileges. Each shared server is a co-op neighborhood of sorts, and bad apples in the form of spammers and resource hogs (knowing or otherwise) can quickly ruin things for the rest of us. I wish the neighborhood was better ... It's disheartening to see that well over 1/3 of the 1700 sites on my server are machine-generated sites containing no useful information other than SEO keywords, that exist solely to try to collect their $0.00287 per hit. Just sharing my IP address with them makes me feel cheap somehow. Oh well, hopefully they don't use much bandwidth.
The only thing that worries me somewhat is the several horror stories I have seen unfold here regarding extremely lengthy recovery after a serious server failure. I hope HG is constantly learning from these experiences to improve on backup and recovery procedures.
Overall, I am very satisfied with service, support, and value from HostGator and hope to remain a customer for a long time.
