Question Shared Or VPS? (For ME)

Of course when you see the thread's title you gonna reply "go for VPS" but the shared account at Hostgator, and only hostgator is sufficient for me till now : )

But what makes me start thinking about VPS is that I need to setup a radio broadcasting using a script such as: ShoutCast but I'm not sure if it will work with shared or not, and if it will need VPS or dedicated.

I've read somewhere also that shared servers sometimes are faster than VPS or do better performance with Wordpress sites and static HTML pages, is that true?

Any suggestions?

To run a script such as ShoutCast you would need VPS or Dedicated. You can see the Compatible Technologies page to see comparisons.

As posted if you want to do streaming audio you will need VPS or dedicated.

SKIP shoutcrap...its exactly that, plus there are better and open source/community based programs.

Get IceCast and then check out the thread on how to make it work.

+1 Icecast. Shoutcast always had weird untraceable issues for me, like random disconnects and bitrate drops.

So, Reseller does not support that too?

No, while it supports creating multiple cPanel accounts, server config files are still "shared".

BTW, you should read the Terms of Service with an eye to your wallpaper downloads, which may be a no-no for shared hosting.

Checking that....

EDIT: I checked the TOS and found nothing to prohibit the wallpapers download. If you're talking about source usage, I always make sure I don't exceed the limits (25% CPU, it's always 0.1%, Inodes never exceeded 50000, it's always below 30000, Monthly Transfer is not overloaded below 10 GB always.) Please refer to the part in your tos, if it's forbidden to use images gallery on shared hosting, I might be able to upgrade to VPS or close the wallpapers site at the moment.

Remember, this is a peer forum and HG staff, with "Gator" in front of their names, aren't continuously on it.

Most image galleries are fine...it's the downloads that may be iffy. Whether your activity is considered file-sharing depends on a variety of factors, including the size and frequency of downloads and whether you allow uploads.

Such restrictions on resource-intensive activities are why shared account servers may be "quicker".
