Shared SSL / Wordpress Administration

I'm beginning to wonder if it is impossible to administer (securely) Wordpress on a Hostgator account with a shared SSL.

Here's what I've done...
Installed a plugin to administer WP using SSL
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...-secure-admin/

Configured it to use a shared SSL. In the case of Hostgator, this means using a url that looks like this:
https://gator123.hostgator.com/~myac...blog/wp-admin/

Unfortunately, once you configure this, the plugin fails. Trying to access the blog admin login page results in an error: Redirect Loop

Ok, so I contact HG support. They say it's a problem with the plugin not working. So, I contact the plugin developer (very nice guy). He has me turn on debugging and even upload a php file to see if SSL detection is working on the server. Nope.

When you use a shared SSL and access a link (as above), the resulting response from the server looks as if it is not detecting a SSL connection. That is, it it says it's using HTTP - even says it's using port 80.

The shared SSL that comes with your account is really only useful for logging in to cpanel securely, not for use on a database driven website like wordpress.

If you really need SSL you would be better off purchasing and having HG install a SSL cert for your domain name.

Thanks, striddy...I accidentally deleted my post when I was going to make an edit.

I don't like the idea of transmitting passwords in the clear, so I'll look into purchasing a cert. Thanks again.
