Default Shared SSL vs. Private SSL

Can anybody explain to me what is the main diference between Shared SSL and Private SSL?
Can I have OSCommerce with Shared SSL and use SSL (secure transactions)?
thanx!

Hi,

A shared ssl displays as https://ip/~yourusername/ in the address bar.
It is available to you for free.
A private ssl would display as https://www.yourdomain.com in the address bar.
You can buy Comodo 128 bit certificates at HostGator (including free installation).

More info on SSL is explained in the FAQ

OScommerce should work with Shared SSL.

Bye,
Stef.

FYI:

http://www.hostgator.com/sharedssl.shtml states that you can use https://secure5.hostgator.com/~usernamehere/ but when I try to use it, I get a message stating "secure5.hostgator.com is not found. please check the name and try again" (i'm using Mozilla Firefox v 0.92).

I am able to get https://67.18.54.118/~usernamehere and https://gator5.hostgator.com/~usernamehere to work corrrectly.

...your Swamp plan states Private SSL, so should I be able to have https://www.mydomain.com on that plan without Comodo cert?...if not I don't understand why Swamp plan states Private SSL?

You cannot have a private ssl without having some type of cert. You do not have to purchase the Comodo cert but then you will have an install fee of, I think, 30.00 if you purchase it elsewhere. The checkmark just indicates that it is available with that plan. With the baby plan, you cannot have a private ssl, even if you purchase the certificate.
