Default Setting up a home developement webserver (Looking for advice please read!)

Hey ive got pretty deep into PHP now and i need to manage my work through CVS does anyone have any suggestions on setting up a decent server that runs apache, php, mysql, CVS and prob some zend stuff too. I am open to any suggestions including operating systems, comp spec, setup and alternate ideas such as how you manage all your web development projects.

I really look forward to hearing all your suggestions

If you want to build your own server I reccomend just being an intranet server. You can't run an efficient site off a DSL line. I would reccomend just setting up your pc as a server so you can test all your software on there. http://apache2triad.com/ is an easy to use installer which'll get you up and running. Haven't worked with CVS though, actually I don't even know what a CVS file is.

yeah sorry i should have made it clearer that it was to run on a LAN. I just installed SUSE on an old 300mhz pentium 2 machine, it was the only os i could get to install due to a dodgey cd drive. I haven't setup apache yet, although i think it might be best to attempt to remove alot of the stuff thats running by default. It currently takes about 20 mins just to boot up lol

Actually I reccomend that it would be easier to test on a Windows based machine. Unless you're doing something that needs Linux to run. Apache2triad is Windows only. Lemme check but, I think I've seen something just like it for linux. Ah, here it is: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

that looks perfect :P thx alot man. I would love to use windows since it is only for personal use but im installing all this on an old laptop and the damn cd doesn't work for windows 2000 upwards making installation very difficult and installing windows 98 kinda makes setting it up as a server useless. Im hoping that once i get that software you linked me to installed i can boot up without the interface and linux should then run pretty smooth and i can get on with my web design stuff again

oh btw CVS is used to look after projects it can auto increment updates to work and keeps backups its very handy i just wish it wasn't such a pain to get all this setup, oh well it will be worth it in the end.

That's good, the old laptop will most likely run linux better then windows anyway.

That's good. Normally a well done google search can save loads of time.
