OK, so I guess this might be harder than I imagined. I used a free hosting credit with my registrar (godaddy) and I'm having too much trouble trying to set up a splash page.
My question is, without using any templates or webpage builders that hostgator offers, is it difficult to set up a splash page with a simple logo that you click on for yourself to lead into the site, such as this? Thanks in advance for all help. I know I'm completely dumb to websites. |

It's simple. Make a page, call it index.html
Put an image on it as a link to /main.html (or whatever your main page will be) Look at the source code for pages, using View > Page Source (Firefox). Do you want a simple page, or one with rollover images like that? |

Well, yeah. I'm looking for something simple to leave up until I can get the rest of my site done.
I'm thinking my logo on a plain white/black background and a few other tiny logo's that pertaints to the site under it (Pay Pal, myspace, del.icio.us, etc.) They'll all be rollover images. Maybe a little text. But it just seems more complicated than I expected. Can I do all of this directly on the hostgator service without any applications? |

This has nothing to do with your host-- it'll work the same way on hostgator or godaddy. Even though we're calling it a splash page, to the server, it's just a plain old HTML page. If you're not familiar with HTML (even though what you're describing would only be a few lines), do you have access to something like dreamweaver?

Forgot to add: whatever page you name index.html will show up to the user first (there are exceptions to this but don't worry about them now). So as long as you name your page, index.html, the user will see it first.

Well, Godaddy for some reason seems to force me into using Microsoft Frontpage or a FTP. I know zilch.
But yes, I do have Dreamweaver and didn't know it. Can I just do my splash page on Photoshop, and then slice the images in Dreamweaver? If so, then what should I do? (Thanks for the help so far) |

Hi,
FTP is exactly how you'd get the files to the server on godaddy or hostgator. Make the image on photoshop, and bring it into dreamweaver to actually setup where each image should link to. Then, give dreamweaver your FTP information and it will upload the page(s) for you. |

Thanks.
That's interesting. I might have to solicit work pretty soon . But I'm going to try to get the hang of this while I'm still in the set-up stages.Good thing is, I think I might understand exactly what I have to do now that I have a program like this. But I'm definately still open for any advice. I'm waiting on my logo to be delivered so I can get the splash page done.
