Server Load to High?

I have been with HG for just over a month now. I have seen a lot of posts of people complaining about slow upgrades, slow servers etc but have never had any problems.

I am still fairly problem free so far, support have been good when things have stopped working. My questions is, my sites seem to be getting slower and slower and the server load hovers between 5.00 and 6.00. I have screenshots with it sitting at over 18.00 and during these times its almost impossible to access the cpanel. I have already raised a support ticket to see what they are going to say about it. But what is a normal server load that people here are experiencing. I run a couple of unix/linux boxes at work and they rarely go above 2.00.

You should not be seeing a load over 4 on your machine. Anything under 4 and your machine should run fine. It really should run fairly good between 4 - 8 as well, but that would not be optimal.

HG is very good about making sure loads don't go to high on their shared accounts. Once reported, they will take action to eliminate the load issue.

When you think you have load issues, just report them. It doesn't hurt anything to report them, but don't waste support's time reporting loads less than 4 or 5, those would be normal loads for a shared machine. Don't base reports on the load number, but on how fast your sites are running.

Also, you can't compare loads on one machine to loads on another machine. The load numbers, like 3.0 or 1.0 have little real world meaning. One machine running a 3.0 might be EXTREMELY slow while another server might run fine at 3.0. If you think your box is running slow, check the load, if it appears high, report it. If you see a load of 7.4 and the machine is running fine, don't report it.
