Its because you actually have a chance of achieving those limits, whereas on the other plans, when traffic reaches a certain limit the sites get suspended due to server load issues.

I very much doubt that the serverload issue applies to semi-dedicated and hence it seems like a marketing move to get people to move to the more expensive plan ? I.e. from $10 to $75 ?

With semi-ded, there are only a few other people on the server with you. HostGator is much less strict with those plans about CPU usage and max mysql connections.

Its a "HIGHER" performance plan. Your paying for the extra performance. As someone else pointed out, you may actually be able to use all of the bandwidth.

Its still amazes me that a company can offer a product that they know cannot be supplied if used fully. Most people see large amounts of disk space and bandwidth for a great price thinking thats what they need and will get but after a few months they might find their account has been suspended if the actually try to use it. They were not to know they were just using what they thought was available to use and still well within any limits in terms of disk space / bandwidth.

Its worrying to see how many accounts are being suspended recently. I chose Host Gator because they didnt offer the same as others, i wanted to avoid this and was and still am happy to pay a bit extra and get a bit less but have something that i can use without to much concern.

I know it must be hard to compete with other companys overselling and i also appreciate cpu usage needs to be monitored to maintain reliable hosting but i can see why some people are getting upset in finding their accounts suddenly suspended. I always though CPU usage was an excuse that some other popular hosts used for when you simply used to much disk space or bandwidth.

Maybe they could warn customers they are on the limits and give them 24 hours to respond / fix the issue or backup their data etc or maybe rethink what is offered to be more accurate, anyway this bit is going off topic i will save it for another post.

I suppose in reality most customers only ever use 5-10GB of space and little bandwidth in which case these plans are great. For the rest maybe offer VDS so they dont have to worry about it, sorry going of topic i will save it for another post.

The response to that would be if the server you were on was being overwhelmed because someone was slamming it with their site, would you be willing to have your site basically useless for 24 hours while the person who was causing the problem pondered what they should do?

It very easy to say, be nice, don't suspend people, give them a chance, until your site sucks or your email isn't working or your mySQL isn't working. Then suddenly, you start to wonder, maybe they should do something.

However, you are correct. HostGator should put limiters on the servers that automatically clamp down on site using too much processor power without suspending them. Then the system would be automated, everyone would be treated equally and no one could complain, because it was being done systematically.

If they are going to suspend all of these people, they should some way for customer to know just how bad they are doing.
