Question Secure Shell Access (SSH)

I apologize if this is in the forum somewhere however I have not been able to find it yet...

Today I signed up for a account on Hostgator and after I signed up realized there was one question that I need to know......

I did not see it listed, however since it is part of the CPANEL I am assuming that SSH is offered as well correct?

Not unless you have a dedicated server. I don't think SSH and cPanel have anything to do with each other.

No, due to security reasons, shell access from cpanel or otherwise is disabled in a shared environment. There are very few tasks that actually require shell access, most things can be done through the file manager or other cpanel functions.

This is interesting though.. In the demo version of CPANEL on hostgator.com the java version pops up when you click on it......

Honestly, SSH is one of the reasons I moved some sites to a different host. Well, that and HG doesn't do VPS. Sure, you can do pretty much everything through cPanel, file manager, and FTP; but once you know what you're doing SSH can be much faster.

But with the ones I have here, I'm glad they don't offer SSH. The impression I get is that SSH on a shared host can be dangerous.

Yes, while it is in a shared environment SSH is the only way to go. I can download files so much faster with TAR, chmod files, insert mysql commands, etc alot faster through the prompt rather than through the control panel....

I wouldn't say that SSH is inherently dangerous in a web hosting environment if it is setup properly.

But I will give hostgator a try.... If it doesn't do what I would like I am just going to host my services somewhere else...... The reason that I am trying out hostgator is the fact that I have heard positive comments on the uptime... The last hosting company I was with (dzones.com) had alot of downtime, even though they stated that they had a 99.9% uptime, which I found hard to believe....
