Lightbulb SCP/SFTP support

I would really like to be using SCP/SFTP instead of FTP. In addition to having access to better clients it is a newer more secure protocol. Is there a reason HostGator cannot support both?

HG doesn't allow SSH access in shared server environments.

I have been informed by support that the reason there is no SFTP support is that HG won't enable SSH and SCP/SFTP depends on it. Oh well, that's understandable. What I don't understand is why it is such a non-issue for so many people.

Doesn't FTP transmit clear-text passwords during each connection? That's not good. I can't even get TLS to work for FTP, it times out after LIST. Is there another secure option I'm not aware of? I'm not an SSL expert so bear with me.

I'm pretty sure you can connect via SSL to FTP. Ask live chat support though, I haven't done this myself.

The dedicated boxes have SFTP/SSH. I use it all the time.

I understand the security risk involved with SSH/SFTP, but are there any risks associated with FTP over TLS? Like thlayli mentioned, it starts to work at first, but it times out after the LIST command, so it is at least partially implemented already.

If hostgator wanted too they could set the ftp to use SSL and then the password issue would be a none issue. I can do it in about 5 secs onm y *nix box and does not require any thing special other than chainge a few lines. The only problem I can see is not all ftp clients support ssl connections.

SFTP should allow you to see everything. Keep in mind that SFTP starts off in your root directory, which is really /root, not root as in /.

I'll second that, SFTP/SCP would be AWESOME to have...
I don't mind that we don't have SSH access, but SFTP/SCP would be a huge PLUS IMHO, but I don't think you can have one w/out the other (correct me if I am wrong), so I understand why HG doesn't want it's users having SSH, because they might royally mess something up if they aren't careful.

I just tried to connect by sftp using winscp and failed. Then I asked live chat support guy - he contacted an admin and then told that (unfortunately) this option is disabled. If you are sure about this - can you give a link please? As far as I can see - knowledgebase tells just about ssh access. If sftp is not allowed - I don't know what we're doing here...

Have you requested and received SSH (actually JailShell) access? You cannot use SFTP without having SSH access.

Not yet. As I know - to get ssh access I have to provide my id/dl. I'd prefer to get information first, and then decide - if it worth to go further. And I cannot find any mention of sftp on hg website. It's very strange - do you mean that in order to use sftp to connect to my own site I need to prove my identity with my driver license?

In order to use SFTP or SCP with your account you have to have SSH access. This is due to the way cPanel works. So, yes, you will have to follow HG's requirements of proving identity to get SSH access so that you can use SFTP. When I had a shared account I sent in the ID and got SSH access. Many shared hosting providers no longer allow any access to SSH.

This is more due to the way SFTP works. SFTP is FTP over SSH. So without an ssh connection, you can't do it.

We actually no longer require ID for SSH jailed shell access. Just mail in to request it if you need it. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks!
